Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Structural Fiber Cost AdvantageThe Mackenzie supply area produces about 2.3M m3 of sawlogs versus Conifex’s roughly 0.8M m3 need. This surplus can support reliable sourcing and lower delivered log costs, reinforcing the mill’s structural cost position.
Integrated Power FlexibilityPlant ownership lets Conifex redirect chips to internal generation when external chip demand or prices weaken. Although this may reduce chip-sale revenue, it can protect utilization and preserve value from residual fiber over the cycle.
Potential Cost-reduction InvestmentsThe planned ~$15.3M projects target conversion costs, reliability and planer capacity, with 2–3 year paybacks if financed and completed. These investments could improve unit economics and operating resilience once production restarts.
Bears Say
High And Rising LeverageDebt-to-equity climbed from about 0.43–0.46 in 2021–22 to 3.30 TTM as equity declined. This weakens financial flexibility, raises refinancing dependence and leaves less room to absorb prolonged losses or fund the restart.
Persistent Losses And Cash BurnTTM gross margin was about -16.8% and net margin about -43%, while operating and free cash flow remained negative through TTM. Persistent cash burn limits self-funded investment and makes recovery dependent on outside capital.
Tariff-driven Liquidity BurdenU.S. duties and tariff deposits reached USD49.4M (~CAD68M), matching lumber borrowings and the working-capital deficit. This trade-cost exposure can constrain liquidity and delay a sustainable restart until funding or duty relief emerges.
