Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 13, 2026|% Change Since:3.45%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was predominantly positive, supported by strong loan and customer deposit growth, solid profitability, stable credit trends, healthy pipelines, strong capital ratios and continued expansion and talent investments. The main challenges were mortgage banking pressure, deposit-cost competition, net interest margin compression, higher expenses, the non-accrual interest reversal and expected seasonal moderation in fourth-quarter growth. Highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.

Company Guidance

Management expects full year loan and deposit growth within its mid to high single digit range, with growth to moderate into the fourth quarter due to the normal timing of pay downs, renewals and larger commercial closings, while pipelines remain healthy and activity is expected to be really strong as the company heads into 2027. Full year net interest margin outlook excluding loan accretion is 3.7% to 3.8%, with fourth-quarter core margin expected to remain near third quarter levels; each 25 basis point increase in fed funds is expected to produce around a 3 basis point increase in margin. Banking segment expense guidance was narrowed to $325 million to $335 million, near the lower end of prior guidance, mortgage earnings are expected to be lower in the fourth quarter and 2027, and net charge offs are expected to remain within the company’s long term target range.

  • Strong Earnings and ProfitabilityThird-quarter EPS was $1.2 and adjusted EPS was $1.21. Net income totaled $60.2 million, or $60.9 million on an adjusted basis. Return on average tangible common equity was 15.2%, or 15.7% on an adjusted basis, while return on average assets remained above 1.4%.
  • Robust Loan and Customer Deposit GrowthLoans grew at an annualized rate of 9.7%, at the very high end of the forecasted mid to high single-digit range. Customer deposits grew approximately 11.2% on an annualized basis, while total deposit growth was 8.8% after the decline in brokered deposits. Management expects full-year loan and deposit growth within its mid to high single-digit range.
  • Broad-Based Commercial and Consumer ExpansionLoan and deposit growth was fueled by commercial and consumer businesses and by attracting new customer relationships across business units. Community markets including Oliver, Newnan and Tuscaloosa performed well, while metro markets including Birmingham, Chattanooga and Knoxville also contributed solid production.
  • Healthy Pipelines and Customer AcquisitionManagement reported healthy activity levels, strong loan and deposit pipelines, and meaningful opportunities to deepen existing relationships and add new customers. Loan utilization rates were down 2% to 3% on construction and commercial and industrial loans, leaving potential for growth toward the normal C&I utilization range of 46%.
  • Stable Loan Yields and Pricing DisciplineContractual loan yields remained stable at 6.21%, while late-quarter production came in at approximately 6.44%. Management attributed the results to pricing discipline and its customer-focused approach.
  • Strong Core Deposit FranchiseThe company strengthened its granular core deposit base through growth in active customer accounts and average balances, while adding several large commercial relationships. Management stated that relationship-based deposit gathering remains a long-term competitive advantage and that customer deposit growth could be double digits for the year.
  • Stable Credit Quality and Limited Loss ContentOverall credit trends remained stable. The allowance coverage ratio ended the quarter at 1.47%, while net charge-offs and non-performing asset ratios remained stable. Management said the approximately $13 million non-accrual loan is supported by adequate, mostly liquid collateral and is believed to have relatively low, if any, loss content.
  • Modest Provision ExpenseProvision expense totaled $1.4 million. More favorable economic forecast assumptions were largely offset by reserves associated with loan growth, while individually evaluated credit activity was limited compared with the second quarter.
  • Mortgage Banking Customer-Relationship ProgressThe company launched a program to deepen relationships with new mortgage customers through deposit and investment accounts. Among participating borrowers, 83% had a checking relationship with FirstBank, average deposit balances were approximately twice the existing customer average, median FICO scores were above the current portfolio average, and loan-to-value ratios were below secondary-market-originated loan values.
  • Mortgage Platform Transition and Strategic OptionalityManagement said mortgage banking remains an important source of new customer relationships, balance-sheet growth and fee-income optionality. The company also stated that its mortgage platform and balance-sheet optionality allow it to retain selected higher-yield mortgage loans if appropriate, while lower rates could support later gain-on-sale income.
  • Capital Raising and Strong Regulatory RatiosFB Financial issued $125 million of subordinated debt during the quarter to support loan growth and strategic initiatives. At quarter-end, the common equity Tier 1 ratio was 11%, the Tier 1 leverage ratio was 10%, and the total risk-based capital ratio was 13.6%, all described as well above regulatory requirements.
  • Balance-Sheet FlexibilityApproximately 61% of the investment portfolio was floating rate with relatively limited embedded unrealized losses. The securities portfolio represented about 9% of total assets, versus a historical range of up to approximately 14% to 15%, providing capacity to deploy excess deposits into floating-rate securities if pricing is attractive.
  • Share Repurchases and Capital DeploymentThe company continued share repurchases during the quarter and said it would remain thoughtful and active about repurchasing shares at price levels considered appropriate. Management stated that capital levels provide flexibility to support growth, return capital to shareholders and pursue strategic opportunities.
  • Expansion in Western North CarolinaFB Financial converted its Asheville loan production office into a full-service location, establishing a presence in North Carolina. Management identified Western North Carolina as a target expansion area and said it expects to continue building its presence and brand there.
  • Hiring and Internal Talent DevelopmentThe company hired around 10 people during the quarter across community and metro markets, including Nashville, and said its talent pipeline was as full as it has ever been. Management is focused on recruiting relationship-oriented employees while developing early-career associates who have grown into important relationship-management roles.
  • Positive Market Outlook and Growth AmbitionsManagement said customer activity remains healthy, employment trends are healthy, commercial activity is solid, and Southeast markets remain positioned to outperform many areas of the country. The company expects to continue pursuing market-share gains, expand its presence in existing and new markets, and deliver sustainable long-term value.
