Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 29, 2026|% Change Since:-3.57%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was strongly positive overall. Acadian reported record AUM, revenue, profitability, and EPS; sustained 11-quarter positive net flows; exceptional long-term and improving short-term investment performance; strong demand across established and newer strategies; and a conservative balance sheet. The main challenges were moderated quarterly flows due to client rebalancing, higher operating and variable compensation expenses, uncertainty around funding timing, and the absence of Q3 share repurchases, but these issues did not outweigh the company's reported growth and operating momentum.

Company Guidance

For full year 2026, the variable compensation ratio is now expected to be approximately 34%-38%, with the realized ratio informed by the level and timing of performance fees and deferred compensation; management said it would not necessarily pencil in a 34%-38% range for each and every year. The near-term aspirational operating-margin target is 38%-40%, which management feels well positioned to realize for the full year, with the possibility of revisiting that target and continuing to realize some ongoing margin expansion. Systematic Credit is expected to receive its first external institutional funding later this year, while wealth-channel resourcing may change over the next 12, 18, 24 months. Capital priorities remain organic growth, maintaining a strong balance sheet, and returning excess capital through dividends and share repurchases, with no urgency to reduce the term loan.

  • Record Assets Under Management and Strong Client FlowsAssets under management reached a record $239.6 billion as of September 30, 2026, up 44% from Q3 2025. Acadian generated $2.6 billion of net inflows in Q3, representing a 4% annualized organic growth rate, and $28.3 billion of net inflows in the first nine months of 2026, representing 21% annualized organic growth. This marked the 11th consecutive quarter of positive net client flows.
  • Exceptional Investment PerformanceNinety-six percent of revenue-weighted strategies outperformed their benchmarks over three-, five-, and 10-year periods. The proportion of revenue represented by strategies outperforming over the trailing one-year period increased to 95% from 73% a year ago. Five major implementations—Global Equity, Emerging Markets Equity, Non-US Equity, Small-Cap Equity, and Enhanced Equity—had 100% of assets outperforming benchmarks across three-, five-, and 10-year periods.
  • Strong Long-Term Alpha GenerationAcadian's revenue-weighted five-year annualized return in excess of benchmark was 4.8% at the end of Q3 2026, while the asset-weighted five-year annualized return in excess of benchmark was 3.9%. By asset weight, at least 94% of strategies outperformed their respective benchmarks across three-, five-, and 10-year periods.
  • Enhanced Equity and Extension Strategy GrowthEnhanced Equity represented more than 30% of AUM. Extension strategies grew from approximately $5 billion a year ago to more than $13 billion, an increase of nearly 170%, and represented approximately 5% of total AUM. Gross inflows were led by Enhanced Equity and Extension strategies, with Extension demand supported by strong investment performance.
  • Record Profitability and Earnings GrowthU.S. GAAP net income attributable to controlling interests increased 135% year-over-year and EPS increased 138%. ENI increased 78% to $48.3 million, while ENI diluted EPS increased 79% to $1.36, the highest EPS in the firm's history. Adjusted EBITDA increased 67%.
  • Record Management Fees and Revenue GrowthTotal ENI revenue increased 39% year-over-year to $189 million. Management fees increased 38% to a record $188 million, primarily reflecting higher average AUM driven by market appreciation and continued positive net client cash flows.
  • Operating Margin ExpansionENI operating margin expanded nearly nine percentage points year-over-year to 42.6%, compared with 33.2% in Q3 2025. The operating expense ratio fell six percentage points to 37.1%, reflecting improved operating leverage.
  • Progress in New Growth OpportunitiesAcadian expects to receive its first external institutional funding for Systematic Credit later in 2026 from a prominent U.S. asset owner. The Tax-Aware strategy, launched in May, received initial client funding. Acadian was also selected as an inaugural investment manager for UBS Global Wealth Management's exclusive manager access fund program in Asia, and funding has already started from that partnership.
  • Broad and Replenishing Institutional PipelineManagement described the institutional pipeline as very robust across strategies and client geographies. The pipeline has been replenished following sizable mandate fundings, with awarded business awaiting funding across Extension, Enhanced Equity, and core strategies. Demand was described as healthy across Global Equity, Emerging Markets Equity, Non-US Equity, international strategies, and Systematic Credit.
  • Positive Market and Strategy-Level PerformanceGlobal equity markets advanced modestly in Q3 2026, with resilient economic growth and continued AI-driven investment more than offsetting elevated geopolitical tensions and higher energy prices. Acadian generated strong alpha across most major strategies, with particularly strong contributions from Emerging Markets, Small-Cap Equity, and Extension strategies.
  • Strong Balance Sheet and Conservative LeverageAs of September 30, 2026, Acadian had $150 million of cash and $113 million of seed investments, with $200 million outstanding on its term loan credit facility and no outstanding balance on its revolving credit facility. Gross debt to Adjusted EBITDA was 0.7 times and net debt to Adjusted EBITDA was 0.2 times, with gross leverage well below the 1.5-times through-the-cycle target.
  • Long-Term Capital Returns and DividendOutstanding diluted shares decreased 59%, from 86 million in Q4 2019 to 35.6 million in Q3 2026. Over that period, $1.5 billion of excess capital was returned to stockholders through share buybacks and dividends. The board declared an interim dividend of $0.10 per share payable on December 23, 2026.
  • Stable Fee Rate Supported by Higher-Fee InflowsThe blended fee rate was stable quarter-over-quarter. Management said the basis-points fee rate on Q3 inflows was higher than on outflows, largely driven by Extension strategies. Extension strategies are also increasingly represented within performance-fee-eligible AUM, which remains approximately 12% of total AUM.
  • Expansion of Wealth-Channel AccessAcadian is expanding access to its institutional investment capabilities through partnerships including St. James's Place, UBS Global Wealth Management, and its UCITS platform. Management stated that the approach leverages existing investment capabilities and infrastructure and requires fairly limited additional resourcing at present.
