Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call included meaningful structural positives, including strong new-store performance, e-commerce growth, a substantial store pipeline, cash generation, and a differentiated health and wellness proposition. However, the dominant tone was cautious to negative because comparable sales, transactions, traffic, frequency, margins, and EPS were under pressure; the full-year outlook was reduced; shrink and fuel costs remained challenges; and management acknowledged that substantial pricing and other investments would create near-term margin pressure.
For 2026, on a 52-week basis, Sprouts now expects total sales growth of approximately 4.3%, comparable store sales of approximately negative 1.7%, 42 net new stores, EBIT of approximately $605 million, a corporate tax rate of approximately 25%, capital expenditures net of landlord reimbursements of approximately $310 million, and diluted earnings per share of approximately $4.80, assuming more than $300 million in share repurchases; full-year share repurchases are expected to exceed $300 million. For the fourth quarter, comparable store sales are expected to be between negative 2% to negative 4% and diluted earnings per share between $0.47 and $0.51, including gross margin deleverage of approximately 90 basis points and SG&A deleverage of approximately 170 basis points. The additional 53rd week is expected to contribute approximately $190 million of sales, $20 million in EBIT, and $0.16 of diluted earnings per share, while EBIT margins are expected to remain above 5%; the company is not ready to guide for 2027 or speak to the comp as it relates.
- Total Sales Growth Driven by New StoresThird-quarter total sales were $2.3 billion, up $104 million or 5% year over year, driven by strong new store performance.
- Strong New Store Performance and PipelineThe 2026 store vintage is outperforming expectations, and recent vintages are comping positively. Sprouts opened 15 new stores during the quarter, its largest quarterly opening cadence, ended the quarter with 504 stores across 25 states, and opened 27 net new stores year to date. The company has more than 105 executed leases and over 160 approved new stores and continues to expect 42 net new stores in 2026.
- E-Commerce Continued to GrowE-commerce sales increased 12% and represented more than 16% of total sales. Sprouts also expanded its e-commerce reach through the launch of Shipt, its fourth platform.
- Sprouts Brand Outpaced National BrandsSprouts Brand continued to outpace national brands in the company's stores and represented approximately 26% of sales.
- Operating Cash Flow and Share RepurchasesYear-to-date operating cash flow was $555 million. The company invested $275 million in capital expenditures net of landlord reimbursement and returned $299 million to shareholders through the third quarter by repurchasing 3.9 million shares. Sprouts had $537 million remaining on its $1 billion share repurchase authorization and expects full-year share repurchases to exceed $300 million.
- Balance Sheet FlexibilitySprouts ended the quarter with $229 million in cash and cash equivalents and $22 million of outstanding letters of credit. Management said the balance sheet and cash generation continue to provide flexibility.
- Differentiated Health and Wellness OpportunityManagement described Sprouts' curated assortment, product innovation, smaller-format model, and store pipeline as differentiators in the health and wellness market, which it estimated represents a market opportunity of more than $290 billion.
- Customer Response to Differentiated InnovationManagement cited encouraging customer response to Wellness Bowls priced below $10, $29.99 family meals for four, and fresh-baked organic sourdough for $4. Innovation, newness, health, convenience, freshness, and value were said to be working across categories including frozen, bakery, and deli.
- Affordability and Pricing InitiativesSprouts is rebuilding its pricing strategy, plans to reduce prices on healthy and holiday staples nationwide, and expects to roll out the broader strategy nationally in January. The strategy will emphasize Sprouts Brand, healthy essentials, innovative products across price points, convenient meal solutions, and personalized value rather than broad-based discounting.
- Supply Chain and Technology InvestmentsManagement identified supply chain as a significant self-help lever, with the next phase of self-distribution expected to include selected Sprouts Brand products. The company also plans to modernize systems, selectively apply AI, connect data across the business, and use loyalty data to improve customer understanding, marketing, merchandising, and product development.
- Long-Term Profitability Levers Remain AvailableManagement cited expanded self-distribution, improved retail media, vendor partnerships, sourcing initiatives, and continued cost savings as opportunities to rebuild profitability over time. Despite near-term margin pressure, the company expects EBIT margins to remain above 5% and said 5% would ideally represent a floor.
- Strong Store-Level and E-Commerce PropositionManagement said new stores remain a high-return vehicle, e-commerce is a growth driver and proof point for the model, and e-commerce baskets are larger. Customers were also described as continuing to value Sprouts' shopping experience and differentiated products.
- Loyalty Data Capabilities AdvancingSprouts is approximately one year into its loyalty program and said it now has a good set of data and talent capabilities to use the program more extensively. Management said it had only begun to unlock the data's potential for understanding customer need states such as gut health.
- No Negative Impact Yet from Agentic ShoppingManagement said it has not seen anything indicating that agentic shopping is negatively affecting Sprouts and is evaluating how the technology could help customers find unique products and solutions.
