Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 15, 2026|% Change Since:-5.39%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was broadly positive: Nordea reported solid profitability, income growth, strong savings and lending momentum, robust credit quality, effective cost control and a strong capital position, while maintaining its financial guidance and strategic targets. The main negative factors were the unquantified potential increase in risk exposure amounts from the ECB corporate model review, the resulting pause in share buybacks, margin pressure, interest-rate volatility affecting net fair value, and slower wholesale and Finnish corporate activity.

Company Guidance

For full year 2026, Nordea reiterated guidance of a return on equity of greater than 15% and a cost-to-income ratio of 44% to 45%; net interest income was previously guided as flat to slightly up for net interest income on 2026, but lending margin pressure probably means it will be more at the flat to the slightly up end of that, while costs are expected to land around EUR 5.5 billion for the year. Net fair value is expected to be a lower-than-normal result for the full year, and loan losses remain well within the group's long-term guidance of 10 basis points, with the long-term expectation of around 10 basis points. Nordea said there is no change to its financial guidance, targets or capital policy, business plans include profitable growth, and pausing buybacks is pending clarity on the REA impact; no decisions are expected before 2027.

  • Solid Group Performance and Maintained GuidanceNordea performed well in the third quarter, with total income up 2% year-on-year, return on equity of 15.1%, and earnings per share of EUR 0.35, broadly stable year-on-year. Full-year 2026 guidance was unchanged, with expected return on equity greater than 15% and a cost-to-income ratio of 44% to 45%.
  • Strong Fee and Savings GrowthNet fee and commission income increased 9% year-on-year, driven by 14% growth in savings income. Demand for savings and investment products remained strong, while assets under management increased 13% to a record EUR 509 billion, supported by strong net flows and market performance.
  • Net Interest Income and Lending Volumes ImprovedNet interest income increased 1% both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter despite lower lending margins and foreign exchange effects. Corporate lending increased 8% and corporate deposits increased 7%; household mortgage volumes rose 2% and household deposits increased 4% year-on-year.
  • Effective Cost Management Despite Strategic InvestmentCosts were flat year-on-year excluding foreign exchange effects despite heavy strategic investments in growth, resilience, technology and AI. Nordea said structural productivity improvements and realized savings are supporting continued investment while keeping overall cost growth under control. The third-quarter cost-to-income ratio was 45%, in line with full-year guidance.
  • Strong Credit QualityNet loan losses and similar net result were 7 basis points in the quarter, well within Nordea's long-term expectation of around 10 basis points. The bank said household finances remained strong, corporates were generally well positioned, funded and capitalized, and its underwriting and credit management approach remained consistent and prudent.
  • Robust Capital PositionNordea's CET1 ratio was 15.8% at the end of the quarter, 1.9 percentage points above current regulatory requirements. The bank said its strong capital position and capital generation support the strategic priority of deploying capital for profitable growth.
  • Continued Investment in Technology and AINordea continued investing in growth, resilience, technology and AI, with a particular focus on using AI to redesign core processes and improve the customer experience. The bank also continued simplifying processes, improving productivity and advancing its Nordic scale agenda.
  • Positive Nordic Economic and Business MomentumNordea said growth expectations for its four home markets had improved, with structural investment in artificial intelligence, defense, infrastructure and energy transition creating opportunities. Finland was showing early signs of improvement, corporate activity across the Nordics remained strong, and the bank said there was no indication of a significant slowdown in corporate momentum.
  • Personal Banking Growth and Market-Share GainsPersonal Banking delivered solid lending growth and strong fee income. Mortgage volumes increased 2% year-on-year, and Nordea captured 21% of Swedish market growth year-to-date through August. Investment-product assets under management increased 15%, recurring savings inflows rose 14%, and Norway's savings fee income increased 20% year-on-year.
  • Assets and Wealth Management ExpansionPrivate Banking net flows amounted to EUR 0.9 billion in the quarter, while net fee and commission income in Assets and Wealth Management increased 14% year-on-year. Life and Pension assets under management increased 20% year-on-year, gross written premiums rose to EUR 3.3 billion from EUR 2.9 billion a year earlier, and wholesale distribution net flows returned to positive at EUR 0.5 billion.
  • Business Banking Momentum and Customer AcquisitionBusiness Banking lending volumes increased 6% year-on-year in local currencies and deposits increased 2%. The number of new customers joining Nordea increased 58% year-on-year. Total income rose 5%, assets under management increased 18%, and the cost-to-income ratio improved to 44% from 46% a year ago.
  • Recognition for Digital Banking OfferingNordea Business and the mobile app won Global Finance awards for Best Corporate Digital Bank and Best Mobile Banking App in each of Nordea's four home markets. This was the fourth consecutive year that Nordea received this recognition.
  • Large Corporates and Institutions Volume GrowthLarge Corporates and Institutions delivered 13% year-on-year growth in both lending and deposits. Net interest income increased 7% and net fee and commission income increased 6%, with particularly strong performance in lending and asset management fees. The business arranged more than 150 debt capital markets transactions in the quarter.
  • Positive Private Banking PositioningDespite a crowded Nordic market with many new entrants and boutiques, Nordea reported strong Private Banking franchises across all four countries. Sweden and Norway had strong momentum, Denmark and Finland continued to grow despite their size, and the bank reported approximately EUR 0.9 billion of Private Banking net inflows in the quarter.
  • Corporate Growth Expected to Remain ProfitableManagement said it remains disciplined on corporate profitability and has improved the profitability of Business Banking and Large Corporates and Institutions over the past six to seven years. Nordea said the corporate business completed so far is expected to deliver the all-round profitability expected by the bank.
