Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 23, 2026|% Change Since:3.16%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was predominantly positive. Management reported high equipment utilization, improving operating efficiency, stable-to-improving sector profitability, drilling performance above expectations, positive third-quarter operating cash flow, and clear plans for international and equipment expansion. These strengths were tempered by modest 3% year-on-year third-quarter revenue growth, a foreign-exchange loss that increased to RMB 720 million for the first nine months, CapEx below the RMB 8.4 billion initial guidance, tight equipment availability, and more challenging execution requirements under the 15th Five-Year Plan.

Company Guidance

Management said this year’s workload plan is “better than the expectation” set at the beginning of the year, international business accounts for “between 24% or 25%” of revenue and will be brought to the “next order of magnitude,” and technical services can sustain a “17% to 18% operating profit level,” with operating profit at 17.1% for the first half and 17.2% for the first 9 months; drilling operating profit was 15.5% for the first half and “16% roughly” for the third quarter. Third-quarter revenue growth was 3% year-on-year, and management said it can “maintain slight growth” for revenue this year, with “continued revenue growth” from overseas business if everything goes well. Equipment holdings will increase during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, while vessel utilization should be “100% if not 100%,” or “as high -- as much as we can,” with “full utilization.” CapEx for the first 3 quarters was less than RMB 3 billion versus beginning-of-year guidance of RMB 8.4 billion, and full-year CapEx should be “almost on par with the situation last year, but might be slightly less than the guidance given at the beginning of the year.”

  • High Equipment Utilization and Improving EfficiencyOverall workload and utilization rates for major equipment remain high, equipment resources are being supplied steadily, and operational efficiency continues to improve.
  • Strong Operational MomentumManagement said the company's workload plan for the year is better than the expectation set at the beginning of the year and that the company maintains strong momentum toward high-quality and sustainable development.
  • Stable and High Technical Services ProfitabilityTechnical services operating profit was 17.1% in the first half of the year and 17.2% for the first nine months. Management said the sector can sustain a 17% to 18% operating profit level.
  • Improved Drilling ProfitabilityDrilling sector operating profit was 15.5% in the first half of the year and roughly 16% in the third quarter, representing steady performance with a slight increase.
  • Drilling Performance Above Initial ExpectationsOilfield drilling services performance was better than expected at the beginning of the year. Overseas performance, particularly in Norway and Brazil, was highlighted, while domestic performance was at least on par with overseas performance.
  • Predictable Overseas Drilling ContractsOverseas equipment operations are basically predictable because contracts tend to be longer term. The Norway contract may be extended until the end of the 15th Five-Year Plan period, while Brazil uses a 1,250 plus, 1,250 contract format.
  • International Business Expansion PriorityInternational business currently accounts for between 24% or 25% of overall revenue. Management plans to accelerate the pace of internationalization, improve profitability, leverage CNOOC's international network, deepen its presence in Kazakhstan and Mozambique, and use its technology and conventional equipment advantages.
  • Brazil Market OpportunityCOSL is closely monitoring opportunities related to CNOOC's Brazilian block. The company began operations in Brazil last year and is gradually increasing its familiarity with the local business environment.
  • Revenue Growth MaintainedThird-quarter revenue growth was 3% year-on-year, similar to the first-half growth rate. Management expects slight revenue growth for the full year and continued overseas revenue growth, particularly after balancing the slight impact from the Middle East.
  • Potential Revenue Contribution from CNOOC RecognitionEquipment day rates under the new three-year arrangement with CNOOC were overall maintained steadily, with an additional reward mechanism providing slight day-rate increases for equipment with good operational performance. Management said part of the drilling revenue growth in the first three quarters was attributable to COSL ranking high in CNOOC's ranking.
  • Planned Equipment Capacity ExpansionManagement expects COSL's total equipment holdings, including vessels and rigs, to increase during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. The company plans to build equipment itself and does not rule out purchasing equipment from the market, while considering both domestic and international needs.
  • Deepwater Expansion PlanningCOSL is planning deepwater drilling vessels and is benchmarking international deepwater operational indicators to determine their technical parameters. The company is also closely monitoring overseas deepwater market demand.
  • Positive Operating Cash FlowOperating cash flow turned positive in the third quarter, consistent with management's previous guidance.
  • Technical Services Positioned for Parent-Company DemandOil technical services contribute more than 50% of COSL's revenue. Management said the company has the capabilities and resources to meet demand if CNOOC increases capital expenditure, and expects the technical services sector to maintain a very high market share in China.
  • Domestic and International Drilling Capabilities ComparableManagement said COSL's drilling services capabilities domestically and internationally are almost on par, with both areas described as being in the double digits on average.
