Q4 2026 Earnings Call Summary
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was predominantly positive, reflecting a return to profitability, strong fiscal-year and fourth-quarter improvement, lower SG&A, significant market opportunities, a large pipeline, a healthy balance sheet, and progress on strategic execution. These positives were tempered by a 0.7 quarterly book-to-bill ratio, expected backlog drawdown, lower Process and Industrial Facilities revenue and margin, restructuring costs, cash utilization in the first half of fiscal 27, and the absence of financial guidance during the CFO transition.Company Guidance
Return to Profitability and Full-Year EPS Improvement
Matrix returned to profitability in the third and fourth quarters of fiscal 26. Full-year adjusted EPS was $0.26, an increase of $1.19 compared to last year.
Fiscal 26 Revenue and Gross Margin Growth
Successful execution of backlog drove 14% revenue growth and a 210 basis point gross margin improvement in fiscal 26.
Strong Fourth-Quarter Revenue and Profitability Improvement
Fourth-quarter revenue increased 13% to $244.5 million from $216.4 million. Gross profit increased 140% to $19.5 million from $8.1 million, while gross margin improved to 8.0% from 3.8%. EPS was $0.04 compared to a $0.40 loss in the prior-year quarter, adjusted EPS was positive $0.16 versus a $0.28 loss, and adjusted EBITDA improved to $6.3 million from a $4.8 million loss.
Reduced SG&A and More Efficient Cost Structure
Fiscal 26 SG&A expenses decreased by $7.6 million compared to fiscal 25, and fourth-quarter SG&A decreased to $16.9 million from $17.6 million despite higher variable compensation costs related to returning to profitable performance. SG&A as a percentage of revenue decreased to 6.9% from 8.1%. Management said the organization had been streamlined and flattened to establish a more sustainable cost structure, increase speed to market, and preserve capacity for future growth.
Strong Storage and Thermal Solutions Performance
Storage and Thermal Solutions revenue increased 43% to $137.4 million from $96.1 million due to increased volume of specialty vessel and LNG storage projects. Segment gross margin improved to 6.4% from negative 1.1%; the prior-year margin was impacted by lowered recovery expectations on a legacy project completed in fiscal 21 that was in arbitration, a matter fully resolved in fiscal 26.
Improved Utility and Power Infrastructure Execution
Utility and Power Infrastructure revenue was $73.5 million compared to $73.0 million in the prior-year quarter. Gross margin improved to 12.8% from 9.1% due to strong project execution.
Significant Mining and Minerals Award
Matrix reentered the mining and minerals space, receiving and mobilizing on a significant award that was taken into backlog in the fourth quarter. The company stated that increased commodity pricing and demand for critical minerals essential to energy, technology, defense, and AI infrastructure are supporting the market.
Process and Industrial Facilities Book-to-Bill Strength
Process and Industrial Facilities recorded fourth-quarter awards of $108 million, including a significant mining-related project, resulting in a book-to-bill ratio of 3.2.
Large Opportunity Pipeline and Market Expansion
The opportunity funnel exceeds $7 billion, with more than 40% of the current opportunity pipeline comprised of LNG and NGL projects. Matrix is expanding in legacy, selected new and reemerging markets, including power generation and related infrastructure driven by data-center growth, aging power infrastructure, and increasing domestic electricity demand.
Data Center and Power Infrastructure Progress
Matrix completed two substation projects supporting additional power for the Northern Virginia data center alley and is currently constructing additional substations in the same geographical area and in Eastern Pennsylvania.
America First Refining FEED Selection
Matrix was selected for front-end engineering and design of the storage tank farm for the America First Refining facility in Brownsville, Texas, described as the first new major refinery to be constructed in the United States in more than 50 years. The FEED is due at the end of fiscal Q2, with an anticipated award in late fiscal Q3 or early Q4, subject to the client's financial investment decision.
Construction-Only Awards and Commercial Organization Improvements
The construction-only initiative generated several balance plan awards across the organization in the fourth quarter. Management also strengthened strategic account management, improved opportunity qualification, aligned business development and operational resources around targeted markets, and focused on opportunities with the best risk and reward profile.
Execution, Safety, and Quality Initiatives
The company developed 45 execution initiatives focused on proposal and contracting discipline, engineering and construction processes, safety culture and protocols, change management, and quality management systems. Matrix also completed four air raises safely in the last four months, including a project for Dominion Energy's Brunswick Greensville storage facility featuring a 25 million gallon full-containment LNG storage tank supporting backup fuel supply for 700 thousand businesses and homes.
Enterprise Services Transformation Completed
Matrix completed the final phase of its enterprise services transformation by transitioning project controls and proposal delivery into the organization. The centralized shared-services structure is intended to provide consistent support, improve resource efficiency, and drive continuous improvement.
Healthy Balance Sheet and Liquidity
The company ended the quarter with total liquidity of $283.9 million, consisting of $223 million of unrestricted cash and cash equivalents and $60.9 million of borrowing availability under the credit facility. Matrix had $25 million of restricted cash supporting the credit facility and no outstanding debt.
Potential Stock Buyback
Based on the strength of the balance sheet and the return to profitability, management said it is actively evaluating a stock buyback.
Backlog Supports Near-Term Revenue
Year-end backlog was $953 million, which management said supports strong revenue performance entering fiscal 27. Management expects 70% to 80% of the backlog to be worked off during fiscal 27 and stated that current project margins are delivering close to a double-digit level, with a goal to grow margins above 10%.
