Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Fiber Availability And Cost AdvantageA substantial local sawlog surplus can support reliable mill input and competitive delivered costs over multiple quarters. This gives Conifex a structural operating advantage in Mackenzie, potentially improving margins and utilization when production returns toward steady-state levels.
Owned Power Plant FlexibilityThe power plant provides an internal outlet for residual fiber when external chip demand or pricing is weak. That flexibility can reduce exposure to a single by-product market and preserve value from mill residuals, while a 24/7 restart could broaden the site's earnings base.
Targeted Productivity Capital ProgramIf financed and completed, the projects could improve conversion efficiency, reliability and throughput rather than relying solely on lumber-price recovery. Short stated paybacks suggest the program is aimed at strengthening the site's underlying cost structure and operating leverage over the next several quarters.
Bears Say
Rapidly Rising LeverageThe sharp increase in leverage has materially reduced financial flexibility while recent returns remain strongly negative. A smaller capital cushion makes it harder to fund restarting operations, absorb continued losses or respond to adverse lumber, duty and operating conditions without further financing.
Persistent Negative Cash GenerationNegative operating and free cash flow indicate that the business is not currently funding operations and investment internally. Even though free-cash-flow deterioration has moderated, continued cash burn increases dependence on lenders or new capital and limits the company's ability to execute its recovery plan independently.
Low Utilization And Tariff-driven Funding PressureOperating at roughly 30% capacity leaves fixed costs underabsorbed and contributes to continuing losses. At the same time, tariff deposits of about CAD 68M have created a liquidity burden comparable with lumber borrowings and the working-capital deficit, increasing financing needs during the restart.
