Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Balance-sheet De-riskingA materially lower debt-to-equity (down to ~0.31 TTM) meaningfully improves financial flexibility and regulatory resilience. Lower leverage reduces rollover and funding risks, expands capacity to originate loans or absorb losses, and supports a steadier capital base for multi‑year strategic initiatives.
Rebound In Cash GenerationReturn to positive operating and free cash flow provides durable internal funding for operations, loan growth, and regulatory capital needs. Sustained cash generation reduces dependence on external financing and gives management room to execute strategic pivots over the next several quarters.
Strengthened Governance And Legal LeadershipAdding an experienced Chief Legal Officer strengthens compliance, regulatory disclosure, and board advisory capabilities. Enhanced governance and legal oversight are structural positives for a regulated bank, lowering execution and compliance risk as the franchise pursues mission-driven national growth.
Bears Say
Persistent Losses And Negative ReturnsSizable TTM net losses and negative ROE (~-7.7%) indicate the franchise is not yet generating shareholder returns. Continued losses erode capital, constrain reinvestment, and limit ability to scale lending profitably without sustained margin recovery or a structural improvement in core net interest income.
Volatile Cash-flow ConsistencyWhile recent FCF turned positive, high volatility in free cash flow reduces predictability of internal funding and complicates capital planning. Dependency on timing and working-capital swings raises sensitivity to economic shocks and can impede steady execution of multi-year lending and investment plans.
Strategic Pivot Reduced Loan Growth And EarningsManagement's decision to scale back legacy wholesale multifamily lending reduced CRE concentration but also tempered loan originations and near-term revenue. The pivot improves risk profile but constrains top-line growth and prolongs the timeline to restore sustainable net interest income and operating leverage.
