Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Cash Generation & ProfitabilitySustained FCF (~$2.6B TTM) alongside a recovered net margin (~9%) and robust revenue growth provides durable internal funding for capex, aftermarket investment, and strategic actions. Reliable cash generation bolsters resilience across commodity cycles and supports long-term value creation.
Record IET Orders And BacklogA record IET book-to-bill and a $33.1B RPO provide multi-quarter to multi-year revenue visibility and backlog convertibility. Combined with material IET margin expansion, this indicates structural demand and higher-margin project mix that should sustain earnings and aftermarket streams over the medium term.
Very Strong Liquidity And Balance-sheet CapacityLow leverage and substantial cash/liquidity give Baker Hughes strategic flexibility to fund large projects, integrate acquisitions (e.g., Chart), and pursue portfolio actions without immediate refinancing stress. That balance-sheet strength supports investment through cyclicality and targeted deleveraging plans.
Bears Say
Step-up In Absolute DebtA material increase in absolute debt in the trailing period (despite moderate leverage ratios) raises interest and rollover exposure. If industry conditions weaken or FCF underperforms, the higher nominal debt burden could compress financial flexibility and slow planned deleveraging or capital deployment.
Geopolitical Disruptions (Middle East)Regional conflict has structurally tightened markets and disrupted logistics, reducing OFSE activity and creating uneven project timing. Persistent supply-chain and shipping risks can defer orders, depress service utilization and pressure margins across affected geographies for months, raising execution and revenue volatility.
Inconsistent Operating Cash ConversionWeaker and volatile OCF relative to earnings—driven by seasonality and customer payment timing—means reported profits may not reliably convert to cash each period. That working-capital variability can constrain near-term deleveraging, capex funding, or dividend capacity under adverse conditions.
