Q2 2027 Earnings Call Summary

Q2 2027
Earnings Call Date:Oct 13, 2026|% Change Since:0.42%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was strongly positive, characterized by record sales, broad-based segment and end-market growth, margin expansion, strong cash generation, successful integration of the Seattle acquisition, progress at Washington, Missouri, active capacity expansion and raised fiscal 2027 guidance. The principal challenges were weak HVAC and appliance markets, tight substrate availability, seasonal winter risk, higher interest rates and a lower debt-reduction target related to the acquisition. Highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.

Company Guidance

For fiscal 27, AZZ now expects sales of $1.825 billion to $1.875 billion, adjusted EBITDA of $380 million to $420 million and adjusted diluted EPS of $7.20 to $7.30; it will also expect to reduce debt by $100 million to $140 million during fiscal 27 and continue to opportunistically purchase shares of AZZ stock. The company said Tulsa-area and other greenfield or brownfield plants require $35 million to $50 million, take about 18 months to construct and bring into production, and that normal-year sustaining spending is $50 million, with sustaining capital somewhere between 50 and $60 million. Metal Coatings is still somewhere between 60% and 70% capacity utilization, while Washington, Missouri is expected to get to that 75% anchor customer by the end of the year and is actively working the other 25%; Q4 should be relatively in line with where the company has been seasonally historically.

  • Record Quarterly Sales and Earnings GrowthSecond-quarter sales reached a record $486.9 million, up 16.7% year over year, with double-digit growth in both operating segments. Gross margins expanded 80 basis points to 25.1%, adjusted diluted EPS increased 29% to $2.00, operating income rose to $83.8 million, and consolidated adjusted EBITDA was $110.9 million, or 22.8% of sales.
  • Strong Cash Generation and Balance SheetAZZ generated $102.8 million of operating cash flow during the quarter. Total available liquidity was $376.4 million, debt was reduced by $15 million, and net leverage ended the quarter at 1.3x trailing-twelve-month adjusted EBITDA. Interest expense declined $2.9 million to $10.8 million, driven by deliberate debt reduction and capital market initiatives.
  • Metal Coatings Segment MomentumMetal Coatings sales increased 22.9%, driven by higher volumes across construction, industrial, infrastructure and transportation end-markets, along with inflationary price increases and zinc-related surcharges. Segment adjusted EBITDA margin remained strong at 30.7%, supported by operating leverage on record sales and volume.
  • Precoat Metals Growth and Margin ExpansionPrecoat Metals sales increased 11.5%, driven by higher coil-coating volumes, the continued ramp of the Washington, Missouri facility and value-added pricing initiatives. Segment adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 100 basis points to 21.2%, reflecting higher throughput, operational execution and product mix.
  • Washington, Missouri Facility Ramping SuccessfullyThe Washington, Missouri facility continued to ramp as planned, reached its expected contribution-margin targets for the year and remained on track to reach the 75% anchor-customer utilization target by year-end. Management said the facility could become the fourth-largest site in the fleet by the end of the year and that its remaining 25% capacity is being commercialized.
  • Seattle Galvanizing Acquisition CompletedAZZ completed and integrated the $57.5 million Seattle Galvanizing acquisition, establishing a Metal Coatings presence in the Pacific Northwest. The transaction added a multi-site platform, the region's largest hot-dip galvanizing kettle, a new spin-galvanizing facility and a footprint covering a new five-state region. Management said the business is performing well, has margins somewhat above the fleet average and contributed only one month to the quarter.
  • Broad End-Market GrowthConstruction-related sales grew 15.5%, industrial sales increased 39.6%, infrastructure sales rose 7.2%, transportation activity increased approximately 4%, and container sales rose 153%, benefiting from the Washington, Missouri facility.
  • Favorable Long-Term Infrastructure DemandManagement cited projections for approximately $1.3 trillion of U.S. utility capital investment from 2026 through 2030, including more than $500 billion for transmission and distribution infrastructure. The Department of Energy also announced 31 grid-modernization projects across 26 states under its Spark initiative, representing a $5.25 billion investment expected to unlock more than 23 GW of additional capacity.
  • Customer Backlog and Demand VisibilityOne major utility-structure customer reported backlog growth accelerating from approximately 35% earlier in the year to 44% in its most recent quarter. Management said sustained order activity throughout the grid-infrastructure value chain supports its positive long-term outlook and that it had not heard of cancellations or delays from customers despite higher interest rates.
  • Capacity Expansion Across the NetworkAZZ expanded or is expanding capacity at Crowley, Texas, Kansas City and Reno. These projects are generally sub-$10 million investments and management said they are almost immediately accretive because existing demand is available. Metal Coatings is operating at approximately 60% to 70% capacity utilization across its fleet, leaving capacity for growth.
  • New Greenfield and Brownfield OpportunitiesAZZ initiated a new hot-dip galvanizing plant in the Tulsa area linked to a major anchor customer and is working on two or three additional opportunities. Management estimated investment of approximately $35 million to $50 million per facility, depending on the plant type and real estate costs, and said brownfield and greenfield facilities generally take about 18 months to construct and bring into production.
  • Active Acquisition and De-Verticalization PipelineManagement described the acquisition pipeline as full and said it was in active discussions on three bolt-on transactions of significantly different sizes. AZZ also continues to pursue de-equalization opportunities that allow manufacturers to divest non-core galvanizing and coil-coating operations while establishing long-term relationships with AZZ.
  • Technology and Digital InitiativesAZZ is integrating AI and proprietary digital tools into enterprise platforms to streamline software development and operational workflows, improve data-driven decisions, increase visibility and strengthen operational consistency. Its digital galvanizing system and Precoat Metals' CoilZone platform are being used to improve the customer experience and operational execution.
  • Shareholder Returns and Capital DeploymentDuring the quarter, AZZ repurchased $20 million of stock at an average price of $146.71 per share, increased its quarterly dividend to $0.24 per share and completed the Seattle Galvanizing acquisition. Capital expenditures totaled $18.5 million, while management said sustaining capital in a normal year is approximately $50 million and that organic investments, acquisitions and shareholder returns all fit within its capital plans.
  • Raised Fiscal 2027 OutlookFollowing strong first-half performance, AZZ raised fiscal 2027 guidance to sales of $1.825 billion to $1.875 billion, adjusted EBITDA of $380 million to $420 million and adjusted diluted EPS of $7.20 to $7.30. The company expects to reduce debt by $100 million to $140 million during fiscal 2027 and said it will continue to opportunistically repurchase shares.
  • Infrastructure Solutions Improvement and Vale JV ProceedsInfrastructure Solutions adjusted EBITDA improved from a loss of $2.3 million in the prior-year second quarter to income of $100 thousand in the current quarter. AZZ recorded $7.3 million of equity earnings related to the sale of the lighting business and received an $18.2 million cash distribution as part of the Avail divestitures, which netted to $15.7 million on the cash flow statement after taxes paid by Avail on behalf of AZZ.
