Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Profitability RecoveryThe return to solid earnings and positive operating profit marks a meaningful recovery from the 2022–2023 loss period. Sustained profitability would strengthen internal funding capacity, support infrastructure investment, and improve resilience across the utility’s regulated operations.
Positive Cash GenerationPositive operating and free cash flow in the latest three years indicates that the business is again converting operations into cash after the 2023 downturn. This supports ongoing maintenance, network investment, debt service, and shareholder distributions without relying solely on external funding.
Balance Sheet ImprovementDebt reduction alongside equity rebuilding has improved the company’s financial resilience from the 2023 position. Although leverage remains elevated, this direction of travel can gradually reduce balance-sheet pressure and create greater flexibility for essential generation and grid investment.
Bears Say
Elevated LeverageThe debt-heavy capital structure remains a material constraint despite recent improvement. High leverage can absorb a larger share of operating cash through debt service, limit flexibility for capital spending, and leave the company more exposed if profitability weakens.
Uneven Revenue And EarningsRecent profitability has not yet translated into a consistent growth trajectory. Repeated revenue declines and lower apparent 2026 profit suggest that earnings recovery may be uneven, making it harder to compound results and maintain investment capacity through changing electricity demand and costs.
Cash Flow VolatilityPositive cash flow in recent years is offset by substantial year-to-year volatility, including deeply negative operating and free cash flow in 2023. Such swings can complicate debt reduction, capital planning, and distributions, particularly for an infrastructure-intensive utility.
