Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
North American Volume Growth And Customer WinsVolume growth and new customer wins support International Paper’s competitive position in corrugated packaging. Sustained share gains can improve mill utilization and provide a durable base for revenue growth as shipping and logistics demand develops.
Improving Mill Productivity And ReliabilityA 500-basis-point improvement in mill performance indicates operational gains beyond simple pricing effects. Better reliability, utilization, and productivity can support more consistent margins and strengthen returns from International Paper’s manufacturing asset base.
EMEA Footprint Optimization And Cost SavingsThe EMEA restructuring addresses excess capacity and cost inefficiency across the footprint. Once implemented, the sizable run-rate savings and equipment moves should lower the structural cost base and improve profitability, although execution remains important.
Bears Say
Severe And Persistent Profitability DeteriorationOperating and net losses weaken internal funding capacity and indicate that stable gross margins are not translating into earnings. If overhead, restructuring, impairments, or other costs remain elevated, negative returns could persist despite operational initiatives.
Structural Input-cost And Demand PressureInternational Paper remains exposed to wood fiber, recovered paper, fuel, freight, and labor-related costs while end-market demand is subdued. This combination can limit pricing recovery and keep margins under pressure across packaging and pulp operations.
Weaker Balance Sheet And Investment-heavy Cash ProfileHigher debt and substantial transformation spending reduce financial flexibility while the company is loss-making. Although TTM free cash flow is positive, continued investment intensity and weaker cash conversion could constrain deleveraging and shareholder returns.

Its extensive operational footprint spans the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Pacific Rim, Asia, and various other regions across the Americas. Additionally, they find application in numerous non-absorbent sectors like textiles, filtration systems, building materials, paints and protective coatings, reinforced plastics, and various other industrial uses. International Paper distributes its products directly to ultimate consumers and converters, as well as through an established network of agents, resellers, and paper distributors.

Q2 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call shows clear operational progress (mill performance +500 bps, North America volume growth +1.7%, completed conversions/acquisitions and tangible EMEA cost-out actions) and solid Q2 EBITDA contributions, balanced against meaningful near-term headwinds (heavy outage costs, input inflation, Pine Hill disruption, and a lowered top-end guidance). Management maintains confidence in long-term plans and reiterated mid-teens to mid-20s returns on targeted investments, but acknowledged the macro and geopolitical risks that trimmed near-term upside.View all GB:IPC earnings summariesIPC Net sales Breakdown
