Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
North America Volume GrowthGrowing box volumes and new business wins indicate continued customer adoption in the core packaging franchise. Outpacing the industry would support better mill and converting-plant utilization, helping International Paper protect its market position and build a more durable revenue base.
Mill Productivity ImprovementA 500-basis-point improvement in mill performance suggests operational gains that can persist beyond a single reporting period. Better reliability, utilization, and productivity should support margins and cash generation by increasing output from the existing asset base and reducing inefficiency.
EMEA Cost-out And Footprint OptimizationThe EMEA restructuring creates a sizable recurring cost opportunity rather than relying only on volume growth. Closing excess facilities and simplifying the workforce should improve the segment’s cost structure and margins over the next several quarters, although execution remains important.
Bears Say
Severe Profitability DeteriorationOperating and net losses show that the current business is not converting its revenue base into earnings, despite relatively stable gross margins. Persistent losses can weaken internal funding capacity, reduce returns on invested capital, and make recovery dependent on successful cost actions and improved operating conditions.
Higher Debt And Negative Equity ReturnsAlthough leverage is described as moderate, higher debt combined with negative equity returns reduces financial flexibility. The capital base is currently not producing profits, so prolonged weak performance could constrain reinvestment, increase pressure on cash allocation, and make balance-sheet improvement more difficult.
Input-cost Pressure And Softer DemandElevated OCC, diesel, transportation, and medical costs directly pressure packaging margins while a flat demand outlook limits the company’s ability to offset inflation through higher volumes. This combination could keep earnings recovery dependent on pricing, productivity, and restructuring benefits.

IPC Earnings Call
Q2 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call shows clear operational progress (mill performance +500 bps, North America volume growth +1.7%, completed conversions/acquisitions and tangible EMEA cost-out actions) and solid Q2 EBITDA contributions, balanced against meaningful near-term headwinds (heavy outage costs, input inflation, Pine Hill disruption, and a lowered top-end guidance). Management maintains confidence in long-term plans and reiterated mid-teens to mid-20s returns on targeted investments, but acknowledged the macro and geopolitical risks that trimmed near-term upside.View all GB:IPC earnings summariesIPC Net sales Breakdown
