Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Recurring Membership Economics And High RetentionCostco’s membership model provides recurring subscription revenue alongside merchandise sales, while high renewal rates indicate strong customer loyalty. Rising executive-member penetration and a growing cardholder base can support repeat visits, larger baskets, and durable earnings quality.
Digital Growth And Expanding Omnichannel ReachRapid digital sales growth broadens Costco’s reach beyond warehouse visits and strengthens convenience for existing members. Expanded delivery coverage, rising digital engagement, and incremental online shopping trips can support durable sales growth while reinforcing the membership proposition.
Strong Balance Sheet And Cash GenerationMaterial deleveraging improves financial resilience and gives Costco greater flexibility to fund warehouse expansion, digital infrastructure, and shareholder distributions. Growing operating and free cash flow also supports reinvestment without relying as heavily on external financing.
Bears Say
Gross-margin Pressure And Higher Inventory CostsCostco’s low-markup model leaves profitability sensitive to merchandise mix, inflation, and inventory-cost changes. Faster growth in gas, e-commerce, and pharmacy, together with higher LIFO charges, can constrain margin expansion even when sales growth remains strong.
Membership Growth Is NormalizingSlower membership growth could moderate one of Costco’s most valuable recurring revenue streams and reduce the pace of future traffic expansion. Although retention remains strong, normalization makes continued warehouse openings and member acquisition more important to sustaining growth.
Pharmacy Pricing HeadwindsRegulated and changing drug pricing can pressure pharmacy economics and reduce the contribution from a growing ancillary business. Double-digit prescription growth has offset the initial impact, but continued pricing changes may limit the durability of pharmacy-led revenue and profit gains.

CTO Earnings Call
Q4 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was strongly positive overall. Costco reported double-digit sales and earnings growth, broad-based comparable-sales momentum, record or all-time-high performance in several operating and membership metrics, expanding digital engagement, and continued warehouse and infrastructure growth. The main challenges were lower reported gross margin, a significantly higher LIFO charge, membership-growth normalization, inflation and tariff uncertainty, and ongoing pharmacy pricing headwinds, but management described these issues as manageable and highlighted continued operating momentum.View all CH:CTO earnings summariesCTO Net sales Breakdown
