Alshaya Group, which owns the rights to operate Starbucks stores in the Middle East, intends to lay of over 2,000 staff as the business suffers from boycotts related to the war in Gaza, Reuters’ Hadeel Al Sayegh reports, citing people familiar with the matter. The layoffs, which started on Sunday, amount to roughly 4% of the Gulf retail giant’s total headcount of nearly 50,000 people, the author notes.
