Norfolk Southern railroad inspectors have 1 minute for safety check, WSJ report

Norfolk Southern supervisors can be penalized for trains ready to leave but instead sit in rail yards, Esther Fung, Kris Maher, and Paul Berger of The Wall Street Journal reports, citing current and former employees. Further, train inspection times are restricted and employees who seek more rigorous reviews of the rail equipment or slow down transportation can face discipline. Scott Wilcox, a retired railroader from Norfolk Southern, said railroad inspectors used to have five to eight minutes to check the train’s wheels and brakes for problems, but now they often only have 30 second to 1 minute.
