Meta is facing a possible tax bill of about EUR 870M, or $925M, in Italy following an investigation by prosecutors into whether there is a case for user registrations to be subject to tax, Reuters’ Emilio Parodi reports, citing two people familiar with the matter. According to the sources, investigators believe free membership on Meta sites is exchanged for access to user data and should be classified as an exchange of data, making it subject to VAT sales tax.
