An independent testing laboratory filed a petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration late Tuesday that asked the FDA to recall several acne products from brands including Proactiv, Target’s (TGT) Up & Up and Estee Lauder’s (EL) Clinique that it says have elevated levels of the carcinogen benzene and contain the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide, reported Bloomberg’s Anna Edney. Benzene can cause leukemia in high amounts and over the past three years it has been detected in several popular products, prompting companies including Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Unilever (UL) and Procter & Gamble (PG) to have recalled products, the report noted.
