Exxon Mobil (XOM) is in talks with Tesla (TSLA), Ford Motor (F), Volkswagen (VWAGY) and other automakers about supplying them with lithium as the company seeks to build a business around the battery component, Ari Natter, Yvonne Yue Li and Joe Deaux of Bloomberg report, citing people familiar with the matter. The talks are in the early stages and also include Samsung and SK On Co., sources told Bloomberg. Albemarle Corp. (ALB)is also among the lithium producers Exxon is talks with, the authors note, adding that the chemicals company said in a statement, “given Albemarle’s leadership role in the market, people routinely want to speak with us – especially when looking at potential resources.” Exxon Mobile shares are up 2.9% in afternoon trading.
