The European Union, EU, is debating on a proposal to make technology companies that use the most bandwidth, such as Netflix (NFLX) and Alphabet (GOOG;GOOGL), assist paying for the next generation of internet infrastructure, Jillian Deutsch of Bloomberg reports, citing a draft document. The suggestions are part of a "fair-share" vision that would require large tech businesses to help pay for the traffic they generate. The draft suggested firms contribute to a fund to offset the cost of building 5G mobile networks, fiber infrastructure, and the creation of a mandatory system of direct payments from tech giants to telecom operators.
