DOJ investigating ByteDance for surveillance of American citizens, NY Times says

The Justice Department began an investigation late last year into the surveillance of American citizens by the Chinese company that owns TikTok, three people familiar with the matter told The New York Times’ Glenn Thrush and Sapna Maheshwari. The department’s criminal division, the F.B.I. and the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia are investigating ByteDance, the Chinese owner of the popular short-form video app that competes with the likes of Meta (META), Snap (SNAP) and Alphabet’s (GOOGL) YouTube, one source said.
