Closing Bell Movers: Levi Strauss down 8% after results

Major U.S. indices were down on Thursday despite constructive pre-market results from S&P 500 components Delta Airlines (DAL) and PepsiCo (PEP), but in the first hour of  the evening session, equity futures are heading higher – S&P 500, Dow Industrials, and Nasdaq 100 are all up 0.1%.  A report from Bloomberg indicating that the White House is pushing the BLS to return to work and compile data so as to release September CPI inflation by month-end is indicative of sustaining pressure on the Fed to further ease monetary policy and support the economy.

In commodities, WTI Crude Oil is up slightly this evening, though after four days of gains, Oil prices headed lower on Thursday on re-pricing geopolitical premium amid reports of progress on hostage negotiations between Israel and Gaza.  Likewise, precious metals saw some profit-taking from the particularly acute recent gains – Gold is back below $4,000 after rising as high as $4,080 overnight, while Silver is near $47.50 after testing $50 per ounce.

Consumer Staples was the only S&P 500 sector in the green on Thursday, helped by constructive September sales data out of Costco (COST).  Meanwhile, Materials and Industrials were the weakest sectors, driven by profit taking in precious metals mining stocks for the former and Defense industry names for the latter.
