S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite began the week with fresh record high closes on Monday, but in the opening hour of the evening session, U.S. equity futures are down slightly – Dow Industrials, S&P 500, and Nasdaq 100 contracts are off by 0.2%. Markets are slightly more fearful of the ongoing stalemate in Washington turning into a more protracted slog, as President Trump posted on TruthSocial that while he is happy to work with Democrats on Health Care, the government must be reopened first. On Monday, Consumer Discretionary and Utilities were the best performing sectors in the S&P 500, boosted by the unfolding perception of strong consumer and power demand from accelerating AI utilization. With rising Treasury yields, rate-sensitive Real Estate was the worst performing sector in the index, closely followed by the pressured Consumer Staples.

In commodities, WTI Crude Oil is little changed, though the contract has now registered modest gains for two consecutive sessions as smaller than estimated OPEC+ production increase dented the oversupply discount view. Precious metals, meanwhile, remain unrelentingly in demand – December Gold hit fresh record highs withing $5 of the $4,000 level, while Silver is consolidating its advance above $48 per ounce levels.
