"Box Office Battle" is The Fly’s weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend’s box office.
Disney’s (DIS) “Avatar: The Way of Water” won this weekend’s domestic box office with an estimated $134M opening, which was less than expected. Overseas, James Cameron’s film debuted to $301M for a global cume of $435M. The movie stars Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang, and centers on Worthington’s Sully and Saldaña’s Na’vi character, Neytiri.
BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal and 87North’s “Violent Night” placed number 2 with a $5.6M from 3,528 locations. Behind it was Marvel and Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” with an estimated $5.4M. Disney Animation’s “Strange World” placed number 4 with another $2.2M from 2,970 theaters. Rounding out the top five, “The Menu” earned an estimated $1.7M.

Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Sony (SONY), Warner Bros.’ (WBD), Paramount (PARA), and Lionsgate’s (LGF.A).
