The CoolSculpting machine freezes body fat cells on targeted areas and, in successful cases, these cells die and are absorbed by the body, Anna Kode of The New York Times reports. For some, the procedure results in disfigurement, causing fat to grow, harden, or lodge in the body. This side effect is called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia and typically requires surgery to correct. Allergan Aesthetics, a unit of AbbVie that owns CoolSculpting, says incidents of this is rare, occurring in about 1 in 3,000 people. Research performed by the New York Times indicates this risk to patients may be considerably higher. Reference Link
