Tesla (TSLA) Wows “Eager” Chinese Auto Fans With Robotaxi Debut

EV maker Tesla (TSLA) is set to steal back market share in China after unveiling its robotaxi service in the country for the first time over the weekend.

The Elon Musk-led firm, whose sales have struggled in China in recent months, debuted its Cybercab robotaxi at the China International Import Expo (CIIE).

New Launches

According to the South China Morning Post, the company also launched a longer-range variant of the Chinese-made Model Y, capable of traveling up to 821 km on a single charge. Priced at 288,500 yuan ($40,523), this new model reportedly surpasses the previous longest-range version, which has a range of 750 km.

A marketing official from Tesla said that many visitors had been eager to learn about its autonomous driving technology and posed “numerous” questions regarding the Cybercab, including inquiries about its launch date in China and production costs.

“Chinese drivers are eagerly anticipating fully autonomous cars,” said Chen Jinzhu, CEO of consultancy Shanghai Mingliang Auto Service, who attended the event. “Tesla could win back some market share here if it could demonstrate its superiority in self-driving.”

Sales Drag

Tesla’s appearance at the show marks a return to the Chinese stage after it “skipped” two major events in Shanghai, China’s commercial hub, over the past two years. These were the Shanghai Auto Show in April and last year’s CIIE.

Tesla offered no explanation for the no-show at these events, but perhaps the company had been left a little embarrassed by its recent sales performance in China.

Its mainland sales fell 6% year on year in the first nine months of 2025, facing intense competition from domestic players such as Xpeng (XPEV).

However, it did record a 2.8% year-over-year sales hike in China-made EVs in September. That’s important given its current revenue exposure to the country – see below:

The green-light to Musk’s pay package may also have extra gas in the engine of the firm as it races to meet lofty new targets.

The company unveiled the Cybercab in the U.S. last year. Musk said then that Tesla aimed to produce more than 2 million units every year, with mass production expected to start next year.
