OpenAI’s Text-to-Video Sora: AI Training with YouTube Data Sparks Controversy

Story Highlights

YouTube’s CEO warned that OpenAI using content from the popular video platform could mean a violation of its terms of service.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)-backed OpenAI has taken the world by storm with its ChatGPT and the latest introduction Sora, a text-to-video generator. However, the vast amounts of data that go into training these AI solutions remain a topic of contention.

Is Open AI training Sora with YouTube Videos?

Now, Neal Mohan, the CEO of Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) popular video platform YouTube, has noted that OpenAI using YouTube videos to train Sora could be a violation of the platform’s terms of service.

However, Mohan clarified that he was unaware if OpenAI had actually tapped YouTube videos to train Sora. Speaking to Bloomberg, Mohan noted that downloading video transcripts or video clips could be a clear violation of the platform’s rules.

Last month, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati mentioned that she was unsure if user-generated content from platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram was used to train Sora. According to the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI has considered using transcriptions of YouTube videos to train GPT-5, its next model.

Interestingly, the ability to mine vast amounts of user-generated content on their own platforms could provide a significant advantage in developing AI tools for companies such as Google, and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META). Meanwhile, the demand for the corporate version of ChatGPT is increasing. The tool now has over 600,000 users, up from just 150,000 in January.
