President Trump is set to meet with lawmakers from both parties at the Oval Office to discuss government funding negotiations after canceling a meeting with congressional Democrats last week. In a Truth Social post, he accused the left of seeking “radical demands,” including “$1 Trillion Dollars in new spending to continue free healthcare for Illegal Aliens.” The government faces a shutdown on October 1 if funding isn’t extended.
Markets See Elevated Odds of Government Shutdown
Democrats and Republicans are currently locked in a stalemate over several issues, such as extending healthcare subsidies and limiting Trump’s power to unilaterally cancel government spending. The last government shutdown occurred in 2019, and prediction platform Polymarket puts the odds of another one this year at 73%.
“Our position has been very clear: cancel the cuts, lower the costs, save healthcare,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on ABC’s This Week.
