Q2 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call combined strong long-term strategic progress, global growth, resilient margins, digital scale and encouraging beverage results with a meaningful U.S. execution setback. Management acknowledged that U.S. comparable sales were below expectations, July comps were slightly negative, marketing and value programs underperformed, and customer satisfaction declined, while outlining corrective actions. The breadth of the long-term achievements and planned responses was balanced by near-term U.S. weakness and external consumer pressures.
Management currently estimates a tailwind of about $0.15 from foreign currency translation on full year 2026 adjusted EPS, down from the previously estimated range of a $0.20 to $0.30 tailwind, and expects G&A to be about 2.2% of system-wide sales for the full year; it expects to reach 50,000 restaurants globally in 2028, remain on track to open about 2,600 gross restaurants by the end of this year, and continue incremental company-owned restaurant divestitures in 2026 and beyond. Management expects IOM and IDL comparable sales growth to accelerate sequentially in Q3 from the 1.5% and 1.9% comps in Q2, respectively, with comparable sales in both segments also accelerating on a 2-year stack basis, expects the U.S. to be in a stronger position as it exits 2026, and said marketing should be fully back to where it needs to be in 2027; in 2027, it expects to begin to see the benefits from global systems and process investments as it seeks to lower G&A percentage spend.
- Long-Term Accelerating the Arches ProgressOver roughly six years, McDonald's grew system-wide sales by roughly $40 billion and operating income by over $3 billion. The company said its brand relevance with the critical U.S. Gen Z consumer increased and that it now holds a significant advantage versus its primary competitor.
- Digital, Delivery and Restaurant Development ScaleMcDonald's has nearly 220 million active loyalty users, generates more than $20 billion in annual system-wide delivery sales, and is well on its way to 50,000 restaurants. Drive-thru modernization and technology investments have improved accuracy and reduced service times.
- Global Systems Integration and AI ReadinessThe company is close to having all major markets on one app, one loyalty program, one pricing engine, one HR system and one finance system. McDonald's said this integration will drive cost savings, accelerate innovation, harden security and enhance stability, while a global data lake will position it to capitalize on artificial intelligence opportunities.
- Positive Global Sales GrowthSecond-quarter system-wide sales grew 4% in constant currency, while global comparable sales increased 1.3%, with positive comparable sales growth across each operating segment. For the first half of the year, system-wide sales grew 5% in constant currency and global comparable sales increased 2.5%.
- International Operated Markets GrowthInternational Operated Markets comparable sales increased 1.5%, driven by Germany, Australia and the U.K. The company said performance improved from slightly negative comparable sales in April toward more normalized levels in May and June and that this largely continued into July.
- International Menu and Marketing MomentumAustralia's Korean Barbecue McCrispy limited-time offering was described as one of the market's strongest chicken LTOs in recent years, while Australia and Germany both gained chicken share. Germany's specialty beverage platform launched successfully, and its Grimace campaign generated 57 million social-platform views and benefited top-line performance. Australia's Menu Heist campaign exceeded expectations.
- International Developmental Licensed Markets and Japan LoyaltyInternational Developmental Licensed Markets comparable sales increased 1.9%. Japan delivered its tenth consecutive quarter of positive comparable guest count growth, supported by a loyalty platform launched less than a year ago that already has nearly 20 million 90-day active users visiting more often.
- Adjusted EPS and Margin ResilienceAdjusted earnings per share was $3.38, including a $0.03 foreign-currency translation benefit. On a constant-currency basis, adjusted EPS increased 5% versus the prior year. McDonald's generated more than $4 billion in restaurant margins in the quarter, and year-to-date adjusted operating margin was 46.9%.
- Controlled G&A Spending and Future EfficiencyGeneral and administrative expenses were 2.2% of system-wide sales, consistent with expectations, and the company remains on track for G&A to be about 2.2% of system-wide sales for the full year. McDonald's expects to begin seeing benefits from global systems and process investments in 2027 as it seeks to lower G&A percentage spend.
- McDonald's > NEXT StrategyThe new McDonald's > NEXT strategy focuses on improving food taste and quality, engaging and co-creating with fans, and simplifying restaurants so crew can deliver stronger hospitality. More than 90% of owner operators said in a post-event survey that they see how the strategy will drive growth.
- Beverage Platform Exceeding ExpectationsThe new beverage platform delivered results in line with or above initial expectations in the U.S., Canada and Germany, with Australia launching in mid-July. More than half of beverage traffic is occurring after lunch, guest checks are higher, new occasions are emerging, and strong food attachment is being observed. Average checks were about 50% above the full-day average check.
- People Training and Leadership StrengthMcDonald's will launch a program on October 5 to retrain more than 2 million restaurant crew members, company employees and supplier partners on gold-standard taste, quality and hospitality, described as the largest training exercise in the company's history. Incoming U.S. President Skye Anderson has 26 years of company experience; during her four-year tenure leading the U.S. West Zone, comparable sales grew more than 30% and average restaurant unit cash flow increased by $100,000.
- Continued New Restaurant ExpansionMcDonald's remains on track to open about 2,600 gross restaurants by the end of 2026. The company said this remains the fastest period of restaurant growth in its history, despite adjusting the timing of its 50,000-restaurant goal.
- Franchisee Financial Capacity and Self-Funding OpportunitiesManagement described the financial health of U.S. franchisees as still quite healthy, with substantial borrowing capacity. McDonald's expects the McDonald's > NEXT investment to be meaningfully self-funded by productivity opportunities in company and franchisee restaurant P&Ls, together with strong top-line growth.
