Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Revenue ReaccelerationThe sharp return to high growth indicates improving commercial traction across Oxford Nanopore’s sequencing platforms and applications. If sustained, stronger demand can expand the installed base, increase recurring consumables revenue, and improve operating leverage as scale builds.
Improving Gross MarginA rising gross margin suggests improving pricing, product mix, or production economics within the platform. Maintaining this level would give future revenue growth greater earnings conversion potential and provide more capacity to fund research, commercial expansion, and customer adoption.
Conservative LeverageVery low leverage reduces balance-sheet pressure and limits the burden of interest and refinancing obligations. This provides Oxford Nanopore with greater financial flexibility to support platform development and commercial investment while revenue growth and profitability continue to mature.
Bears Say
Persistent Deep LossesThe company’s current cost base remains far above the profit generated by its revenue, despite strong recent growth. Persistent operating and net losses weaken earnings visibility and mean that substantial additional scale or cost improvement is needed before the model can sustainably self-fund.
Negative Cash GenerationOngoing negative operating and free cash flow shows that reported commercial growth has not yet translated into internal funding. Continued cash burn can constrain investment flexibility and increase reliance on external financing if the company does not reach profitability or materially improve cash conversion.
Eroding Equity BaseAlthough leverage is low, the shrinking equity base demonstrates that accumulated losses are consuming capital over time. This reduces the balance sheet’s cushion against further losses and makes durable improvement in operating economics increasingly important for long-term financial resilience.

Company Description
Oxford Nanopore Technologies PLC
Oxford Nanopore Technologies plc, founded in 2005 and originally known as Oxford NanoLabs Limited before its name change in May 2008, is a United Kingdom-based enterprise that specializes in developing and commercializing an innovative system for analyzing diverse molecular structures through nanopore-based sensing. Its product range features a variety of devices, including the portable MinION for sequencing deoxyribonucleic acid and ribonucleic acid, and the MinION Mk1C, which integrates basecalling, data analysis, touchscreen controls, and wireless connectivity. For benchtop operations, the company offers the GridION, capable of running and analyzing up to five MinION or Flongle flow cells, as well as the GridION Mk1 nanopore sequencer. High-yield sequencing is made accessible with the PromethION 2 Solo and PromethION 2, while the PromethION 24 and PromethION 48 provide benchtop nanopore sequencers for multiple users to achieve multi-sample and multi-experiment results. Further complementing these devices are Flongle, an adapter for MinION or GridION units, and VolTRAX, a USB-powered tool designed to automate laboratory processes preceding nanopore sequencing. The company also provides a suite of software solutions: MinKNOW facilitates data acquisition, real-time analysis and feedback, local basecalling, and data streaming; specialized Basecalling tools pinpoint the identity and sequence of bases on DNA/RNA molecules; EPI2ME is a cloud-based platform for comprehensive, real-time analysis of nanopore data; and EPI2ME Labs offers bioinformatics support to help users refine their skills and confidence in analyzing their sequencing data. Additionally, Oxford Nanopore Technologies is actively developing new products such as MinION Mk1D, Ubi, Plongle, and SmidgION. All of its products are available for purchase online.
