Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was broadly positive, supported by record underwriting profit, strong operating earnings, an 18.8% quarterly annualized operating ROE, improved loss ratios, growth in the Insurance segment, higher investment income, and technology-enabled efficiency gains. Management also expressed confidence in insurance growth, capital flexibility, and the portfolio's ability to benefit from higher reinvestment yields. The main challenges were declining reinsurance premiums, competitive and deteriorating reinsurance and property market conditions, commercial auto reserve pressure, uneven investment-fund income, lower cash flow, and uncertainty around loss trends and emerging AI-related exposures. Highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.
Management said the insurance business is expected to continue to grow “all in, barring the unforeseen event, at mid-single digits or better,” while the reinsurance business is “likely going to continue to shrink for the foreseeable at 10% rate, somewhere between 10% and 20%.” Investment funds are expected to generate “between $10 million to $20 million” each quarter, while the later expectation was “sort of $10 million to $15 million a quarter”; the domestic fixed income portfolio was “just inside of $24 billion,” with a book yield of “about 4.7 or so percent” and a new money rate “probably between 80 and 100 basis points above that.” Management said duration would continue to be nudged out from 3.3 years, with the life of loss reserves “just a hair inside of 4 years,” and said technology will help mitigate the expense ratio from ticking up, although “it does not mean it won't move up.”
- Strong Quarterly Earnings and Return on EquityThird-quarter operating earnings were $456 million, or $1.17 per share. Underwriting and investment performance contributed to an annualized operating return on equity of 18.8% for the quarter and more than 20% year-to-date.
- Record Underwriting Profit and Combined RatioRecord third-quarter underwriting profit reached $296 million. The current accident year loss ratio excluding catastrophe losses improved 40 basis points to 59.5%, while the expense ratio was relatively flat at 28.6%, producing an accident year combined ratio excluding catastrophes of 88.1% and a calendar-year combined ratio of 90.8%.
- Resilient Catastrophe PerformancePretax current accident year catastrophe losses were $86 million, or 2.7 loss-ratio points. Despite almost twice the number of storm events named by PCS quarter-over-quarter, catastrophe losses increased by only $7 million, or 20 basis points.
- Insurance Segment Growth and Underwriting ImprovementThe Insurance segment's current accident year combined ratio excluding catastrophes improved 1 percentage point from the prior year to 88.3%. Pretax underwriting income increased 10.6% to $238 million. Gross premiums written grew 4.9% to a third-quarter record of $3.6 billion, while net premiums written grew 3.2% to a third-quarter record of $2.9 billion.
- Strong Reinsurance and Monoline Excess UnderwritingThe Reinsurance & Monoline Excess segment reported a current accident year combined ratio excluding catastrophes of 86.9%, resulting in pretax underwriting income of $58 million.
- Higher Investment Income and Core Portfolio GrowthPretax net investment income increased to $384 million. The core investment portfolio grew 12%, and income from fixed maturity securities increased 10.3% from the prior-year quarter due to higher domestic yields and a larger base of invested assets.
- High-Quality Investment Portfolio and Reinvestment OpportunityInvested-asset duration increased to 3.3 years, while credit quality remained strong at AA- and below the average life of insurance reserves. The domestic fixed-income portfolio was just inside of $24 billion, with a book yield of about 4.7% and a new-money rate approximately 80 to 100 basis points above that level. Management said it intends to thoughtfully extend duration and capture the current yield environment.
- Technology-Enabled Operating EfficiencyTechnology and data initiatives have increased submission intake and quoting efficiency by 20% plus, allowing the company to handle more business and respond more quickly. Management said the efficiency is helping the company pursue more small accounts and is being expanded across the organization.
- Small-Account Strategy and Stable RetentionThe company is deliberately shifting toward smaller accounts because it sees better margins there, faces more competition in larger accounts, and can handle smaller business efficiently. Renewal retention remained at 80%, which management said indicates the book is not churning.
- Positive Performance in Selected BusinessesManagement reported continued growth in private client personal lines and in the A&H business. Other liability grew just shy of 4%, with the increase reflecting a deliberate shift toward smaller accounts rather than simply rate-driven churn.
- Insurance Growth OutlookManagement expects the insurance business to continue growing overall at mid-single digits or better, barring an unforeseen event. It said the company remains pleased with the rates it is achieving and believes they can maintain or enhance margins.
- Disciplined AI and Emerging-Risk ManagementThe company is actively evaluating AI-related exposures, developing appropriate policy wordings, applying exclusions when it believes they are appropriate, and seeking to understand the risks and receive appropriate compensation. Management also said its longstanding investment in data positions the company to use AI tools in underwriting and claims, with current benefits primarily showing up in faster intake and responses.
- Capital Return Capacity and Financial PositionStockholders' equity was more than $9.6 billion as of September 30, 2026. The company returned $729 million of capital to shareholders year-to-date and said it still has a 10-figure amount of excess capital, while continuing to take a thoughtful approach to share repurchases and other capital returns.
- Alternative Distribution Expansion Alongside Traditional ChannelsThe company remains committed to traditional distribution while also using alternative channels, including direct-to-retail offerings, direct customer relationships, and embedded or point-of-sale insurance. Management said it intends to meet customers through the channels they prefer.
