Q1 2027 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive, with record financial performance, robust customer demand, expanding margins, strong pricing, growing long-term visibility and progress across ePMR, HAMR and high-bandwidth technologies. The main challenges were near-term input cost increases, exabyte growth temporarily below the company's greater than 25% long-term target, higher qualification-related operating expenses and planned CapEx above the historical range. Highlights significantly outweighed lowlights.
For the second quarter of fiscal 2027, WD expects revenue to be $5.1 billion, plus/minus $100 million, representing a 69% increase year-over-year at the midpoint; gross margin is expected to be in the range of 60% to 61%, operating expenses of $400 million to $410 million, interest and other expenses of $15 million, a tax rate of 17%, and diluted earnings per share of $5.80 plus/minus $0.20 based on a non-GAAP diluted share count of 380 million shares. The latest ePMR platform is expected to represent close to 30% of nearline shipments by the second quarter and 50% by the third quarter of fiscal 2027, while the company expects volume shipments of first-generation HAMR in the first half of calendar year 2027, qualifications with 2 additional customers during the first half of calendar year 2027, and second-generation HAMR qualifications in the second half of calendar year 2027. WD expects exabyte growth to accelerate through the rest of the fiscal year and fiscal year 2028, expects long-term nearline exabyte growth to exceed 25%, expects cost per terabyte to reduce approximately 10% year-over-year in the long run and be less than 10% down year-over-year in the near term, and expects ASP per terabyte growth to have further room to expand over the next 3, 4 quarters. Capital expenditures are expected to average 4% to 6% of revenue over a 5-year period and be modestly above that range over the next 2 years.
- Strong First-Quarter Financial PerformanceQ1 fiscal 2027 revenue grew 55% year-over-year, gross margin expanded to 58% and operating margin reached 49%. EPS increased 161% year-over-year, and free cash flow was $1.4 billion.
- Exabyte Shipment GrowthWD delivered 248 exabytes in the quarter, up 22% year-over-year and 8% sequentially. Management said exabyte growth is expected to accelerate through the rest of fiscal 2027, fiscal 2028 and beyond as product transitions progress.
- Cloud Revenue Driven by Nearline HDD DemandCloud revenue was $3.9 billion, representing 88% of total revenue and increasing 54% year-over-year. Growth was driven by durable demand for high-capacity nearline HDDs, including the initial ramp of the latest ePMR platform.
- Client and Consumer Revenue GrowthClient revenue was $320 million, representing 7% of total revenue and increasing 119% year-over-year. Consumer revenue was $193 million, representing 5% of revenue and increasing 19% year-over-year.
- Gross Margin Expansion and Pricing StrengthGross margin was 58.1%, up 1,420 basis points year-over-year, with incremental year-over-year gross margin above 80%. Average price per terabyte increased 28% year-over-year, compared with growth in the high teens in the prior quarter, supported by favorable pricing across nearline, client and consumer businesses.
- Operating Leverage and Higher ProfitabilityOperating expenses were $391 million, or approximately 9% of revenue, representing a 130 basis point sequential improvement. Operating income increased 152% year-over-year to $2.2 billion, while operating margin expanded to 49.1%.
- Strong Free Cash Flow and Shareholder ReturnsWD generated $1.4 billion in free cash flow and returned $1.1 billion to shareholders through share repurchases and dividends. The Board approved a 17% increase in the quarterly cash dividend, from $0.15 per share to $0.175 per share.
- Healthy Balance Sheet and Reduced Convertible NotesWD substantially reduced its remaining 2028 convertible notes and ended the quarter with a net cash position of $0.5 billion.
- Positive Second-Quarter Fiscal 2027 OutlookWD expects second-quarter revenue of $5.1 billion, plus or minus $100 million. At the midpoint, this represents a 69% year-over-year increase. Gross margin is expected to be 60% to 61%, operating expenses are expected to be $400 million to $410 million, and diluted EPS is expected to be $5.80 plus or minus $0.20 based on a non-GAAP diluted share count of 380 million shares.
- Successful Ramp of Higher-Capacity ePMR DrivesVolume production of the latest ePMR platform, with capacities up to 40 terabytes, started strongly. Management expects the platform to represent close to 30% of nearline shipments by the second quarter and 50% by the third quarter of fiscal 2027, describing the transition as the fastest ePMR transition the company has seen.
- HAMR Qualification and Shipment ProgressWD expects to finish qualification of its first-generation HAMR product with 2 hyperscale customers in the first quarter of calendar year 2027 and begin volume shipments in the first half of calendar year 2027. The company also expects to begin qualifications with 2 additional customers in the first half of calendar year 2027 and start qualification of second-generation HAMR drives in the second half of calendar year 2027.
- Expanding Technology Road MapManagement said it is progressing well on its technology road map, with the product path moving from 32-terabyte drives to 44-terabyte drives, 55-terabyte drives and beyond. WD also cited a road map for drives with up to 14 platters.
- High-Bandwidth Drive OpportunityWD is sampling high-bandwidth drives with multiple customers, and management said customer feedback has been positive, with clear use cases and value creation identified. Potential workloads mentioned included KV cache in AI inferencing and video streaming.
- Diversification of the Customer BaseDemand is expanding beyond core cloud and hyperscale customers into enterprise environments, neocloud, AI frontier labs, hybrid cloud solution OEM providers and physical AI customers. Management said this is resulting in a larger and more diversified customer base.
- Long-Term Demand VisibilityFor its top 7 customers, WD said it has good visibility through 2030 and 2031, with demand signals increasing quarter after quarter. Customers are making longer-term infrastructure investments and extending planning horizons into the next decade.
- Durable AI-Related Storage DemandManagement identified ongoing cloud growth, model training and development, inference and agentic AI, and physical AI as four storage growth drivers. It said inference and agentic systems generate logs, checkpoints, model outputs and decision data, while robotics, factory automation and autonomous vehicles create and retain data at scale.
- Positive Physical AI IndicatorsWD said it is seeing promising signs in physical AI, including increased demand from customers in Asia involved in autonomous vehicles. Robotics was also identified as a growing area, with management expecting broader global activity over the next 2 to 3 years.
- Investment in Head, Media and Factory Automation TechnologyWD plans to continue investing in heads, media technology and factory automation to support higher areal density and higher-capacity drives. Capital expenditures are expected to average 4% to 6% of revenue over a 5-year period, with CapEx as a percentage of revenue expected to be modestly above that range over the next 2 years.
- Focus on Areal Density Rather Than Unit CapacityManagement said investments are intended to increase capacity through areal density and higher-capacity drives rather than by adding unit capacity. The company said its vertical integration in heads and media supports customer total-cost-of-ownership benefits and profitability.
- Positive HAMR Product FeedbackManagement reported very positive customer feedback on first-generation HAMR, particularly regarding failure rates and drive performance relative to other market participants. WD said it is not discounting HAMR products versus ePMR products and prices them on a dollar-per-terabyte basis.
