Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was predominantly positive, characterized by strong earnings, a 22% adjusted return on tangible common equity, improving credit metrics, record capital markets and treasury management revenue, stable deposit costs, net interest margin expansion, solid capital and liquidity, and continued customer and commercial activity. The main challenges were moderating loan and deposit growth, consumer and housing-market weakness, slower investor real estate activity, sequentially lower wealth management revenue, ongoing technology and cybersecurity investment, and continued monitoring of selected credit and interest-rate risks. Overall, the positive developments significantly outweighed the stated challenges.Company Guidance
Strong Third-Quarter Earnings and Returns
Regions reported earnings of $611 million, or $0.71 per share. Adjusted earnings were $622 million, or $0.73 per share, with adjusted pretax pre-provision income of $870 million and an adjusted return on tangible common equity of 22%.
Healthy Customer Engagement and Franchise Momentum
The company reported healthy customer engagement, continued growth in consumer households and checking accounts, and commercial clients continuing to invest in their businesses, technology, and long-term growth initiatives. Management said activity levels across the franchise remained constructive.
Strong Credit Quality
Annualized net charge-offs declined 13 basis points to 29 basis points of average loans. The business services criticized ratio declined 30 basis points to 4.71%, and the nonperforming loan ratio declined 8 basis points to 59 basis points.
Record Capital Markets and Treasury Management Revenue
Capital markets and treasury management each delivered record revenue during the quarter, reflecting strong client engagement and continued execution. Capital markets income increased 23% from the prior quarter, driven by stronger M&A advisory activity, securities underwriting and placement fees, commercial swap income, and syndications revenue.
Diversified Fee-Based Businesses Remain Strong
Capital markets, treasury management, and wealth management continued to perform at historically strong levels. Management expects wealth management to finish 2026 with a record year despite some quarterly softness.
Loan Growth Outlook Remains Positive
Average and ending loans increased modestly from the second quarter, driven by broad-based commercial lending activity, including government and public sector and wholesale and financial services. Regions continues to expect full-year average loan growth to be up low single digits versus 2025.
Commercial Production and Pipeline Strength
Production was up year over year by approximately $4 billion, representing a 60% increase in production. Line utilization was also up year over year, and management said client engagement, production activity, and pipeline strength supported confidence in the growth outlook.
Net Interest Income and Margin Expansion
Net interest income increased 2% linked-quarter, while net interest margin increased 2 basis points to 3.68%. Interest-bearing deposit costs increased only 1 basis point to 1.70%. Fourth-quarter net interest income is expected to increase between 1% and 2%, with net interest margin expected to be approximately 3.70%.
Structural Repricing Tailwinds
Yields on newly originated fixed-rate assets were approximately 100 basis points higher than yields on maturities in the third quarter. The repricing advantage is expected to expand to between 100 and 125 points in the fourth quarter and provide a tailwind that persists for multiple years assuming current rate levels.
Deposit Franchise and Noninterest-Bearing Deposit Base
The noninterest-bearing deposit mix remained in the low-30% range, consistent with the company's target. Commercial noninterest-bearing balances increased during the quarter, and management continues to expect 2026 average deposits to be up low single digits versus the prior year.
Small Business and Mass-Affluent Customer Growth
Year-to-date small business account openings reached their highest level in the past decade, excluding the pandemic period, and were approximately 100 basis points higher than the prior-year period. The mass-affluent customer base grew about 8% year over year, with 85% of those customers coming from Regions' existing customer base.
Treasury Management Penetration Gains
Treasury management penetration rates increased by more than 7%. Management said the business is focused on helping customers manage cash flow and cash balances while adopting emerging payments products.
Cloud-Based Deposit Platform on Schedule
Regions plans to begin an associate, friends-and-family pilot of its cloud-based deposit platform within the next week or two, followed by a larger pilot in the first quarter of 2027. Customer conversions are expected to occur in waves during 2027, with completion targeted toward the end of the second quarter or sometime early in the third quarter.
Technology and Cybersecurity Investments
Regions continues to invest in talent, technology, products, cybersecurity, and infrastructure. Management described the deposit platform as a real-time system expected to support faster product and pricing deployment, client onboarding, sales enablement, and problem resolution, while cybersecurity investment is expected to continue.
Capital Strength and Shareholder Returns
The estimated common equity Tier 1 ratio was 10.8% under the current capital framework and approximately 10% including AOCI and proposed Basel III endgame risk-weighted asset changes. During the quarter, Regions repurchased $95 million of shares and paid $255 million in common dividends. The adjusted capital level remained above the 9.25% to 9.75% target range.
Positive Operating Leverage Commitment
Regions continues to expect full-year adjusted noninterest expense to increase between 1.5% and 3.5% and expects to deliver full-year adjusted positive operating leverage. Management reiterated its commitment to generating positive operating leverage over time.
Strong Liquidity Position
Liquidity remained robust, with total sources well above required levels. Regions said it remains well positioned to support future loan growth while maintaining disciplined balance-sheet management.
Commercial Real Estate and Portfolio Management Actions
Investor real estate increased approximately 2.4% during the quarter. Regions also executed approximately $850 million of securities portfolio repositioning, with an approximately $15 million loss and an expected payback of about two years, consistent with its discipline of targeting payback periods of less than three years.
