Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was strongly focused on progress in manufacturing scale-up, customer engagement, and expansion into AI data center, defense, aerospace, and other advanced markets. QuantumScape highlighted the Eagle Line's operational progress, new ecosystem partnerships, QS PowerBlock performance, first billings from Honda and QSAS, and $819.8 million of liquidity. The primary negatives were the $84.5 million GAAP net loss, $60.7 million adjusted EBITDA loss, continued full-year losses, revision of the PowerCo payment structure, and the fact that the 100 megawatt-hour production line is not targeted to start production until 2028.Company Guidance
100 Megawatt-Hour Mass Production Line Announced
QuantumScape announced a 100 megawatt-hour mass production line aimed at meeting opportunities in its QSDC and QSAS business verticals. Engineering work on higher-throughput processes and equipment is underway, with start-up production targeted for 2028.
Expanded Manufacturing Ecosystem Partnerships
QuantumScape announced a partnership with Mühlbauer Group to provide cell assembly equipment for the planned production line. Together with Murata and Corning, the company now has announced partnerships covering the production flow from materials and separators through downstream cell assembly, supporting its work toward gigawatt-hour-scale production.
Eagle Line Demonstrating Scalable Production
The Eagle Line, inaugurated in February, is fully operational and producing increased volumes of QSE-5 cells for customers. The company said the line has become the workhorse of customer engagement, increased customer sampling, generated customer billings, and provided the foundation for the next stage of production scale-up.
QS PowerBlock Performance Advantage
QuantumScape launched the QS PowerBlock, an in-rack energy storage reference design for AI data centers. In testing, it demonstrated 4x the power density and 5x longer run time than the Open Compute Project reference specification.
Thermal Stability Validated in Customer and Third-Party Testing
The company stated that conventional lithium-ion batteries, including LFP batteries, are not thermally stable above approximately 180 degrees Celsius, while QS solid-state batteries have been shown to be thermally stable well over 300 degrees Celsius. QuantumScape recently validated the result through customer testing and third-party laboratory testing.
Strong AI Data Center Customer Feedback
Following the QS PowerBlock launch at the Open Compute Project conference, QuantumScape said customer feedback was very strong. Customers highlighted the changing role of energy storage, the need for safer in-rack power, and demand to see the QS PowerBlock available in volume.
First Honda Billings and New Mobility Agreement
QuantumScape recorded its first customer billings from Honda in Q3 under the agreement announced in June. The company also signed an agreement with a new leading global player in mobility manufacturing and said it has active engagements with two other top 10 OEMs in addition to Honda and Volkswagen PowerCo.
Continued Volkswagen PowerCo Collaboration
QuantumScape said its relationship with Volkswagen PowerCo remains very strong and that the overall collaboration goal is unchanged. The companies are working to update the statement of work, add milestones tied to technology advancements, and expand the engagement to applications including data centers and robotics.
Broad QSAS Market Engagement and First Billing
QSAS is engaged with customers across defense, aerospace, medical devices, consumer electronics, and other advanced applications. QuantumScape has shipped QSE-5 samples to customers in the defense, aviation, and telecommunications sectors and recorded its first QSAS customer billing in Q3.
Supply Chain Differentiation for Defense and Aerospace
QuantumScape said its cells are built in America, do not depend on graphite, and use partners described as non-foreign entities of concern. The company stated that defense customers are already seeing foreign-government restrictions on procuring advanced batteries, making supply-chain vulnerability a relevant point of differentiation.
Automotive Commercialization Progress
The company said automotive cell-development engagement remains robust across global automotive customers. It is working to bring automotive customers onto a common technology platform beyond QSE-5, with further details on the next-generation technology platform and collaboration model planned for the November 11 solid-state battery symposium in Kyoto.
QSDC and QSAS Expected to Reach Market Faster Than QSEV
QuantumScape said QSDC and QSAS may offer a faster time to market than the more rigorous QSEV application, while its original QSEV targets remain unchanged. The company said the end-to-end production solution is intended to support rapid development of the high-value markets.
Customer Billings of $9.8 Million
Q3 customer billings were $9.8 million and included automotive and non-automotive customers, ecosystem-partner payments, and cell shipments. QuantumScape said the Eagle Line's increased sampling activity is flowing into customer billings.
Strong Liquidity Position
QuantumScape ended Q3 with $819.8 million in liquidity and said it would remain prudent with its balance sheet.
2026 Financial Guidance Reiterated
The company reiterated full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA loss guidance of between $250 million and $275 million and full-year 2026 capital expenditure guidance of between $27 million and $37 million. Q3 capital expenditures were $4.4 million, primarily reflecting investment in the technology roadmap and associated facility spending.
Planned Capital-Light Automotive Model
QuantumScape said it intends to maintain a capital-light licensing model for automotive applications, transferring technology to customers such as Volkswagen PowerCo and Honda so they can ramp their own production.
Potential Nondilutive Funding Sources for Production Line
QuantumScape is targeting equipment costs to QS of less than $100 million for the 100 megawatt-hour line and is pursuing nondilutive funding sources, including customers, government, ecosystem, and licensing partners.
Progress Across All Four 2026 Strategic Goals
Management said execution toward its four 2026 goals has been strong: demonstrating scalable Eagle Line production, advancing automotive commercialization, entering new high-value markets through QSDC and QSAS, and providing an update beyond QSE-5 through the planned November 11 technology roadmap event.
