Q2 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall. Management reported broad operating growth, higher earnings, strong retention and prospective-student interest, significant Saint Augustine momentum, increased shareholder returns, substantial liquidity, and an improved full-year outlook. The main challenges were AIU System and Trident enrollment declines, lower AIU revenue, higher CTU legal fees, expected CTU enrollment comparison pressure in the second half, and slightly lower operating cash flow.
For full year 2026, the company expects its effective tax rate to be between 23% and 24%, cash paid for income taxes to be in the range of 2.32 thousand% of pretax income, and capital expenditures to be approximately 1% of revenues; full year 2020 adjusted operating income is expected to range between $258 million and $263 million, adjusted earnings per diluted share are expected to be between $3.10 and $3.16, a 19.9% increase at the midpoint, and full year revenue is expected to increase versus 2025. At Saint Augustine, the company expects revenue and total student enrollments growth each quarter, resulting in double digit adjusted operating income growth for the full year; at AIU System, it expects operating income to grow for the full year. For the third quarter of 2020, adjusted operating income is expected to be in the range of $64 million to $65 million versus $61 million in the prior year quarter, with adjusted earnings per diluted share to range between $0.73 and $0.74 per diluted share versus $0.65. Future quarterly dividend payments are expected to be paid out of free cash flows for the relevant year, subject to board approval and the company's available retained earnings, financial condition, and other relevant factors, and quarterly dividend payments are expected to remain an integral and growing component of the balance allocation capital allocation strategy.
- Year-to-Date Operating Income and Revenue GrowthAcademic institutions performed ahead of expectations in the first half of 2026, with year-to-date operating income growth of 14.4% supported by revenue growth of 3%.
- Second-Quarter Earnings GrowthSecond-quarter net income increased to $48 million, or $0.75 per diluted share, compared with $41 million, or $0.62 per diluted share, in the prior-year quarter.
- Revenue, Operating Income, and Adjusted EPS ExpansionSecond-quarter revenue increased 1.8% to $213.4 million. Operating income grew 6.8% to $54.9 million, adjusted operating income grew 4.4% to $64.2 million from $61.5 million, and adjusted earnings per diluted share increased 19.4% to $0.80.
- Overall Enrollment Growth and RetentionTotal student enrollments increased 0.7% year over year as of June 30, and management said total enrollments grew just under 1% at the end of the second quarter. Excluding Triton University, all academic institutions experienced enrollment growth, supported by strong retention trends and prospective-student interest.
- AI Search Adaptation and Prospective-Student EngagementManagement said the overall impact of the shift toward LLM-based and AI-powered search on enrollment has been modest thus far. The company is increasing investment in channels not directly impacted by the shift, selectively using generative AI to identify and engage prospective students, updating content for AI-powered search, and investing in brand visibility.
- Corporate Student Program GrowthTotal enrollment in the corporate student programs at CTU and AIUS continued to grow. The company is making strategic investments in technology and personnel to support future enrollment growth and is expanding corporate student program teams at CTU and AIU System.
- CTU Continued Enrollment and Revenue GrowthCTU recorded its 11th consecutive quarter of enrollment growth. CTU revenue increased 0.9% to $115.5 million, with year-to-date revenue growth of 2.5%. Management cited sustained student retention, expansion of the corporate student program, and increasing prospective-student interest as supporting trends.
- AIU Operating Income GrowthAIU System operating income increased 9.7% to $12.6 million in the second quarter. Excluding Trident University, AIU System enrollment would have increased year over year despite academic-calendar-related variability, and the system plans to launch new AI-focused programs in the fall.
- Saint Augustine Enrollment and Revenue ExpansionUniversity of Saint Augustine for Health Sciences enrollment increased 6% to approximately 4.2 thousand students, while revenue rose 10.2% to $40.5 million. Growth was supported by strong execution, brand recognition, new program launches, growth in nursing and speech-language pathology, and new occupational-therapy modalities.
- Saint Augustine Adjusted Operating Income GrowthSaint Augustine adjusted operating income increased to $10.7 million from $5.5 million in the prior-year quarter. Management attributed the improvement to enrollment and revenue growth combined with operating leverage as the university scaled its operations.
- Saint Augustine Acquisition Integration and PipelineManagement highlighted the successful acquisition and integration of Saint Augustine, completed in 2024, and said the university is on track for strong full-year 2026 revenue and adjusted operating income, with further growth expected in 2027. The upcoming fall-term enrollment pipeline was described as strong.
- Dividend Increase and Shareholder ReturnsThe board authorized a 13.3% increase in the quarterly dividend from $0.15 to $0.17 per share, the third increase since dividend payments began in 2023. During the first half, the company paid $19.7 million in dividends and dividend equivalents and repurchased $15 million of stock.
- Strong Liquidity and Capital Allocation CapacityThe company ended the quarter with $734.8 million in cash, cash equivalents, restricted cash, and available-for-sale short-term investments, approximately $91.3 million above the prior year-end position. The company expects to use the remaining $85 million of its authorized share repurchase program over time, subject to market conditions and other factors.
- Raised Full-Year 2026 Profit OutlookFull-year 2026 adjusted operating income is expected to range from $258 million to $263 million, compared with $207.6 million in 2025. Adjusted earnings per diluted share are expected to range from $3.10 to $3.16 versus $2.61 in 2025, representing a 19.9% increase at the midpoint.
- Positive Third-Quarter OutlookThird-quarter adjusted operating income is expected to range from $64 million to $65 million versus $61 million in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted earnings per diluted share are expected to range from $0.73 to $0.74 versus $0.65 in the prior-year quarter.
- Continued Investment in Academic and Student Support CapabilitiesThe company continues to invest in marketing, admissions, academics, program development, technology, analytics, real estate, and student support processes. Management said these investments have supported improved academic outcomes and enhanced student experiences.
- Acquisition Opportunity PipelinePerdoceo is evaluating accretive acquisition opportunities, including in health sciences, and management said it is encouraged by ongoing dialogue with academics across its programmatic areas of focus.
