Q1 2027 Earnings Call Summary
The call was broadly positive, with solid core and cloud growth, sustained Content Cloud momentum, strong cash flow, debt reduction, AI commercialization, and maintained full-year guidance. The main challenges were double-digit declines in ITOM and cybersecurity, declining support and non-core revenue, a year-over-year EBITDA margin decrease, and the need to execute planned investments and improve performance in weaker product categories.
For fiscal 27, OpenText expects to increase growth investments over the course of the year, with a greater weighting in the second half, and expects these investments to support stronger revenue growth in its core product categories as it works to meet or exceed its target of 2% to 3% year over year growth in constant currency; growth investments are 100 million dollars for this year. For Q2 fiscal 27, it expects total revenues between $1.26 billion and $1.29 billion and adjusted EBITDA margin between 33% to 34%. Adjusted EBITDA margin in the second half of fiscal 27 is expected to be lower than the first half as growth investments are completed, with typical seasonality starting in January, its fiscal Q3, including employee benefit and salary resets and vacation accruals. The company maintained its full year fiscal 27 outlook ranges on all metrics and expects core every category, including ITOM and cyber, to show growth for the full year, with material improvement expected in the second quarter, third and fourth.
- Core Business and Cloud GrowthQ1 fiscal 2027 core revenue was $864 million, up 2.4% year over year on a reported basis and up 2.7% in constant currency. Core cloud revenue was $339 million, up 11.2% reported and 11.7% in constant currency.
- Strong Content Cloud MomentumContent Cloud revenue grew 20.7% year over year in Q1, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of approximately 20% year-over-year growth. Management also stated that all four core product categories delivered positive cloud growth.
- Total Cloud Growth and Deal ActivityTotal cloud revenue reached $505 million, up 4.3% on both a reported and constant-currency basis, representing the 23rd consecutive quarter of organic cloud growth. The company closed 35 cloud deals greater than $1 million, up 6% year over year.
- Aviator AI Commercial TractionOpenText has more than 150 Aviator AI agents infused across its solutions portfolio, and clients and partners can build their own agents through Aviator Studio. Deals that include Aviator AI agents are, on average, 4x larger, particularly in Content Cloud.
- Strong Recurring Revenue IndicatorsTotal RPO increased 7% year over year, total CRPO increased 3%, cloud CRPO increased 12%, and total long-term RPO increased 13%. Cloud net renewal rate was 95% and client support net renewal rate was 92%, both described as stable and consistent with historical annual levels.
- Profitability Above ExpectationsQ1 adjusted EBITDA margin was 35.8%, above the company’s outlook range of 32% to 33%. GAAP gross margin was 73.2%, up 40 basis points year over year, while GAAP diluted EPS was $0.64, up 10.3%. Management also cited a 35.1% adjusted EBITDA margin in constant currency.
- Cash Flow ImprovementOperating cash flow was $172 million, up 16.6% year over year, and free cash flow was $139 million, up 36.8%. Management stated that the company remains on track to achieve its fiscal 2027 free cash flow outlook.
- Debt Reduction and Financial FlexibilityOpenText reduced gross debt by $949 million from a year ago, including a $1 billion bond issuance used to retire its 2027 maturity and a $300 million tender offer for 2028 bonds. The company also extended the maturity of its undrawn $750 million revolving credit facility. Net debt to adjusted EBITDA was 2.55 at quarter-end, within the company’s internal target range.
- One OpenText Go-to-Market Model Fully StaffedAll 300 client executive roles are now filled across geographies and markets. Every strategic account has one accountable point of contact, supported by cross-sell bundles and the broader OpenText solutions portfolio. Management said client feedback on the model has been very positive.
- Partner Ecosystem ExpansionOpenText’s annual client conference included more than 750 clients and over 400 partners across hyperscalers, global system integrators, independent software vendors, and regional system integrators. The company has created a partner map for each of its 15 markets, including account plans and defined sales responsibilities.
- Focused AI, Cloud, and Migration InvestmentsManagement is directing R&D and other growth investments toward AI infusion across the core portfolio, cloud versions of core products, business network innovation including the next-generation Trading Grid, additional capabilities across the four core product categories, and tools intended to simplify and speed customer migrations from on-premises environments to the cloud. R&D investment is expected to stabilize, with greater focus on core categories.
- Enterprise Assessment Advancing to a Multi-Year Growth PlanThe enterprise assessment has identified five strategic themes: an integrated go-to-market model, a focused and differentiated solutions portfolio, an operating model built for speed and simplicity, a clearer brand promise, and a culture of disciplined execution and accountability. The resulting strategic framework, financial model, and execution plan are scheduled to be presented at Investor Day on February 10, 2027.
- Fiscal 2027 Outlook MaintainedManagement maintained its full-year fiscal 2027 outlook across all metrics and expects core product categories to achieve 2% to 3% year-over-year growth in constant currency. Second-quarter revenue guidance is $1.26 billion to $1.29 billion, with adjusted EBITDA margin guidance of 33% to 34%.
- Client Examples Demonstrate AI Use CasesManagement cited Aviator deployments across retail supply chains, healthcare service management, and energy contract management, including identifying at-risk trading partners, preventing IT issues, answering employee questions, providing operational visibility, and extracting answers from more than 50,000 complex contracts.
