Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 30, 2026|% Change Since:0.00%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was predominantly positive. Newell reported a second consecutive quarter of sales growth, broad-based market-share gains, improved gross and operating margins, stronger EBITDA, a raised 2026 sales outlook, financing improvements, and continued deleveraging progress. These strengths outweighed the significant inflation headwind, lower reported operating cash flow guidance, outdoor and recreation decline, challenged international markets, and ongoing macroeconomic and tariff uncertainty.

Company Guidance

For the fourth quarter, Newell expects positive year over year growth in both net and core sales of 1% to 3%, normalized operating margin between 8.4% and 9%, normalized diluted earnings per share of $0.17 to $0.19, and a low single digit effective tax rate; for full year 2026, it expects net sales growth of 2% to 3%, core sales growth of 1% to 2%, normalized operating margin of 10% to 10.4%, normalized diluted earnings per share of $0.73 to $0.77 with a midpoint of $0.75 and an effective tax rate of about 20%, operating cash flow of approximately $150 million, total debt and outstanding factored receivables combined to decline by a couple hundred million dollars versus year-end 2025, net leverage to finish comfortably below 4.5x, and capital expenditures below approximately $200 million; for 2027, the base plan assumes global category growth remains roughly in with this year, positive core sales growth, inflation of about $150 million versus $220 million in 2026, cumulative 2 year inflation of $370 million, or about 8%, modest pricing, normalized operating margin down versus 2026 reported level but up by more than the 50-basis-point evergreen target excluding the $100 million tariff refund benefit, and operating cash flow somewhere in the $400 million plus range.

  • Second Consecutive Quarter of Sales GrowthThird-quarter net sales increased 3.7% to approximately $1.9 billion and core sales grew 3.3%, with both exceeding the high end of the 2% to 3% guidance range. Growth was broad based, with 2 of 3 segments, 4 of 6 businesses, 7 of the top 10 brands, 15 of the top 25 brands, and 7 of the top 10 countries growing.
  • Broad Geographic RecoveryThe U.S. continued to grow, while international markets returned to growth, with positive core sales growth across Latin America, EMEA, and Asia Pacific. The company said this was the first time since the second quarter of 2022 that both the U.S. and international businesses were positive.
  • Improved Margins and EarningsNormalized gross margin increased 70 basis points to 35.2%, and normalized operating margin increased 90 basis points to 9.8% from 8.9% a year ago. Normalized diluted EPS increased to $0.20 from $0.17, reaching the high end of guidance. Higher sales and productivity more than offset inflation and tariffs during the quarter.
  • Strong EBITDA and Deleveraging ProgressTrailing 12-month normalized EBITDA increased approximately $173 million year over year, or 20%, to $1.03 billion. Net leverage declined to approximately 4.5x from 4.8x at the end of the second quarter and 5.3x a year ago.
  • Learning and Development GrowthLearning and development delivered its third consecutive quarter of core sales growth. Writing delivered mid-single-digit core sales growth, supported by the strongest U.S. back-to-school point-of-sale growth in three years. Sharpie, Expo, Elmer's, and Prismacolor benefited from innovation, distribution expansion, and improved back-to-school execution.
  • Home and Commercial Segment AccelerationHome and Commercial core sales increased 6%, with all three businesses growing for the first time in five years. Commercial benefited from gains in U.S. B2B and DIY channels, including contributions from the new 34-gallon BRUTE container and expanded BRUTE cleaning lineup. Kitchen delivered its second consecutive quarter of core sales growth, supported by U.S. and Latin American momentum and demand for Rubbermaid Brilliance glass food storage.
  • Home Fragrance and Kitchen Brand MomentumHome Fragrance delivered very strong core sales growth against a favorable prior-year comparison. Yankee Candle returned to double-digit U.S. growth and gained market share through retail-store growth, strong business-to-consumer performance, and grocery distribution gains. Crock Pot also grew, supported by its design-series slow cookers, and October was believed to be the brand's largest sales month ever.
  • Baby Product and Hydration Share GainsWithin Baby, Graco delivered core sales growth, supported by consumer takeaway and car-seat share gains, while Turn2Me and EZ Turn 360 continued to resonate with consumers. NUK delivered positive U.S. point-of-sale growth and gained market share. Contigo delivered core sales growth, and Newell gained share in the hydration segment.
  • Innovation Pipeline RebuiltNewell increased Tier 1 and Tier 2 innovations from one in 2023 to approximately 25 launches planned for 2026. Management said the current cadence of about 25 launches is the appropriate steady-state level, while the company continues to support prior launches through their expected three-year life cycles.
  • New Product Recognition and DemandColeman Snap and Go was recognized among TIME's Best Inventions of 2026. Demand was said to significantly exceed initial expectations, leading Newell to expand availability ahead of the holiday gifting season.
  • Investment in Design and Consumer InsightsNewell opened a new Atlanta Design Center in September. The facility brings design, consumer insights, brand marketing, innovation, and research and development together with advanced prototyping capabilities in a dedicated consumer research environment.
  • Productivity Offset Significant InflationThe fuel productivity program was on track to deliver savings above its original budget and ahead of its stretch target. Savings came from procurement, product design and value engineering, manufacturing, and distribution, while disciplined overhead management and selective pricing also helped offset inflation.
  • Raised 2026 Sales OutlookNewell raised its full-year 2026 outlook to net sales growth of 2% to 3% and core sales growth of 1% to 2%. The company maintained normalized operating margin guidance of 10% to 10.4% and kept the midpoint of normalized diluted EPS guidance unchanged at $0.75, with the range stated as $0.73 to $0.77.
  • Positive Fourth-Quarter Growth OutlookFourth-quarter net and core sales are expected to increase 1% to 3% year over year, which would represent the third consecutive quarter of positive sales growth. Fourth-quarter normalized operating margin is expected to be 8.4% to 9%, and normalized diluted EPS is expected to be $0.17 to $0.19.
  • Improved Financing and Liquidity PositionNewell replaced its secured revolver with an $800 million asset-based revolving credit facility maturing in 2031. A $600 million senior notes offering maturing in 2031 was approximately five times oversubscribed and carried a 6.25% coupon, one-eighth of a point better than the notes it replaced. The proceeds were used to redeem the June 2027 notes and repay part of the revolving borrowings. The company ended the quarter with no short-term debt outstanding, and Moody's revised its outlook from negative to stable.
  • ERP Consolidation CompletedAll 10 of Newell's largest non-U.S. countries now operate with a single ERP system and common organizational structure, compared with four countries in 2024. Management said this effectively represents the end of the company's ERP consolidation journey and reduces operating complexity.
  • Continued Cash Generation and Deleveraging PlansNewell expects total debt and outstanding factored receivables combined to decline by a couple hundred million dollars versus year-end 2025 and expects net leverage to finish 2026 comfortably below 4.5x. Management also expects approximately $400 million or more of operating cash flow in 2027 and continued deleveraging.
  • Positive 2027 Growth FrameworkNewell expects global categories to remain roughly in line with 2026 while maintaining positive core sales growth by growing faster than the category through innovation, distribution gains, and marketing activation. Excluding the $100 million tariff-refund benefit included in 2026 results, management expects normalized operating margin to increase by more than its 50-basis-point evergreen target in 2027.
