Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall. MSCI reported double-digit revenue, EBITDA, EPS, run-rate, asset-based fee, and recurring sales momentum; record or best-ever performance in several product lines; broad growth across regions and client segments; and continued progress in AI-enabled innovation and strategic expansion. The main negatives were ongoing Sustainability and Climate retention and sales pressure, modest Real Assets growth, higher 2026 expenses and interest costs, persistent asset-manager industry pressures, and the absence of a targeted margin expansion. These lowlights were outweighed by the breadth and strength of the company's operating performance.
For 2026, MSCI expects to be at the top end of its expense guidance ranges; acquisitions are expected to add roughly $20 million of additional expenses, incremental performance stock options are expected to add roughly $15 million to $20 million of noncash expenses, and severance is expected to be roughly $10 million to $15 million higher than originally planned. The company increased its interest expense guidance, narrowed its full-year tax rate guidance to 18% to 19.5%, and maintained its free cash flow guidance. For the fourth quarter, Sustainability and Climate recurring net new sales are expected to be roughly flat to slightly positive. MSCI also expects AI to lower the growth rate of EBITDA expenses for running the existing business from mid- to high single digits to the low single digits and eventually to negative growth, while Henry Fernandez said there would be no margin expansion as the company reinvests savings.
- Strong Third-Quarter Financial PerformanceMSCI reported total revenue growth of 12.4%, asset-based fee revenue growth of 25%, subscription revenue growth of 8%, adjusted EBITDA growth of 12%, and adjusted EPS growth of 14% in the third quarter.
- Record Asset-Based Fee MomentumTotal run rate grew 12%, fueled by a record asset-based fee run rate of almost $1 billion. Equity ETF cash inflows were $76 billion, and assets benchmarked to MSCI indexes reached nearly $23 trillion, including roughly $15 trillion actively managed and $8 trillion indexed.
- Share Repurchases and Insider BuyingFrom July 1 through October 19, MSCI repurchased $627 million of shares at an average price of $562 per share. Since the beginning of 2024, the company has repurchased nearly 8 million shares for $4.4 billion, while Henry Fernandez personally purchased 57,000 shares for $30.1 million during the same period.
- Subscription Growth and Improved RetentionSubscription run rate grew 9% after MSCI added nearly $55 million in recurring net new sales. The overall retention rate was 95%, up 30 basis points from the third quarter of the prior year.
- Record Recurring Net New Sales Across Core Product LinesMSCI achieved its best-ever third-quarter recurring net new sales in Index, Analytics, and Private Capital Solutions. Compared with a year earlier, recurring net new sales increased 88% in PCS, 63% in Analytics, and 40% in Index.
- Broad Regional Sales GrowthRecurring net new sales grew 74% in EMEA, 36% in APAC, and 26% in the Americas. APAC delivered its best-ever quarter, driven by Analytics.
- Index Growth and Strong RetentionIndex organic subscription run rate growth accelerated to 11.7%. Subscription growth across hedge funds, banks and brokers, wealth managers, and asset owners was 32%, 15%, 10%, and 10%, respectively. Index retention was above 97%, including 98% with asset managers.
- Strong ETF Inflows and Custom Index MomentumAsset-based fees were supported by $76 billion of equity ETF cash inflows, concentrated in developed markets ex-U.S. and emerging markets. This was MSCI's second-highest inflow quarter, behind only the first quarter of the year. Custom index subscription run rate grew more than 26%.
- Analytics and Private Capital Solutions ExpansionAnalytics organic subscription run rate growth was 7.5%, with LTM recurring net new sales up 18% from the prior LTM period. Private Capital Solutions subscription run rate growth accelerated to 19%, supported by demand for Transparency, Private Capital Intel, Total Plan, data, diligence, and benchmark offerings.
- Strong Asset Owner and Non-Asset Manager PerformanceAsset owners delivered more than 12% organic growth and more than tripled recurring net new sales from a year earlier, driven by total portfolio solutions and integrated risk and portfolio management analytics. Hedge fund growth was roughly 18%, while broker-dealer and bank growth was roughly 10%.
- Strategic Client Wins and PartnershipsMSCI's largest deal of the quarter moved the company from a vendor relationship to a strategic portfolio analytics partnership with one of Asia's largest and most sophisticated sovereign wealth funds. MSCI also closed major Analytics and Index deals with top hedge funds, formalized its UBS private-assets agreement, and used the Vantager acquisition to complete a major deal with a large U.S. bank.
- Innovation Driving New Product SalesThe contribution of new products to third-quarter sales increased more than 50% compared with a year earlier. Management said innovation is also supporting retention, price increases, broader client relationships, and expansion into new client segments and use cases.
- AI-Enabled Product and Model DevelopmentAI is being used to build agentic private-market solutions, specialized data sets, portfolio construction tools, and new factor models. MSCI said the time required to build and fully calibrate a new model has fallen from several weeks to a couple of hours, with the potential to reach minutes.
- New Portfolio and Risk Management OfferingsMSCI launched a new total portfolio management offering for asset and wealth managers, a wealth-manager-specific offering, a custom model service, new factor models, specialized data sets, and lower-latency intraday multi-asset-class risk capabilities.
- Climate Acquisition Integration ProgressThe integration of First Street remains on track, client engagement has been very strong, and demand for physical-risk solutions is growing. Climate run rate growth across MSCI product lines was 8% excluding the impact of First Street.
- Real Assets Retention ImprovementReal Assets organic subscription run rate growth was 2%, supported by improving client retention and client demand for broader data access through Snowflake.
- Strong Cash Collections and Maintained Free Cash Flow GuidanceAlthough quarterly free cash flow was affected by timing and higher interest payments, management maintained full-year free cash flow guidance and said collections remained strong. The company also noted that performance stock-option accruals are noncash expenses.
- Active ETF and Trading Ecosystem OpportunitiesManagement reported significant growth as traditionally active asset managers convert products into ETFs. MSCI expects its tools for traders, hedge funds, broker-dealers, and market makers to be applicable to asset managers as active ETFs become more systematic, scalable, and customized.
- Leadership Transition Within Investor RelationsJeremy Ulan will move to the Lead Finance Director role for Client Segments and Solutions at the end of October, while Craig Carter, currently Head of Corporate Development, will become Head of Investor Relations.
