Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was balanced. Mohawk demonstrated strong cash generation, share repurchases, price and productivity execution, retail share gains, and progress in commercial and selected flooring businesses. However, these positives were offset by broadly soft demand, declining volumes, significant energy and input-cost inflation, pressure in Global Ceramic margins, weakness in residential construction and Europe, and lower fourth-quarter earnings guidance.
For the fourth quarter, management anticipates single digit adjusted net sales growth versus the prior year, with 4 fewer shipping days versus the prior year and 3 fewer days versus the third quarter of the current year; 61 versus 65 shipping days represents about a 6% headwind, and adjusted net sales are expected to be up low single digits on a days and FX adjusted basis. Total underlying inflation on a year over year basis is expected to be similar to the third quarter and management expects to fully offset inflation through price, mix, and productivity actions, with adjusted earnings per share between $1.35 and $1.45 and a 23.5% tax rate. For 2027, management is planning for market volumes to decline, underlying cost of sales inflation to remain up mid single digits in the fourth quarter and into early 27, and continued strong free cash flow; baseline capital expenditure needs are approximately $375 million annually, the new share repurchase authorization is $500 million, and the long term net debt to adjusted EBITDA target is up to 2x.
- Quarterly Sales and Inflation OffsetThird-quarter net sales were $2.8 billion, up 1% as reported and essentially flat after adjusting for foreign exchange and an extra shipping day. Volumes declined 4%, while price and mix increased 4%, helping offset inflation.
- Strong Cash GenerationCash from operations was $471 million and third-quarter free cash flow was $390 million, up 26% versus the prior year. Year-to-date free cash flow reached $626 million, up 78% versus the prior year.
- Expanded Share Repurchases and Lower LeverageMohawk repurchased $261 million of shares during the quarter, more than double the amount repurchased in the first half, reducing outstanding shares by more than 3%. Net debt leverage improved sequentially to 0.7x, and the company approved a new $500 million share repurchase authorization.
- Price, Mix, and Productivity ExecutionPrice and mix contributed $85 million and productivity gains contributed $47 million, more than offsetting approximately $117 million of underlying input cost inflation in the quarter. Management expects the combination of price, mix, and productivity to continue offsetting inflation through the fourth quarter and into early 2027.
- Retail Share Gains and Product MomentumThe U.S. retail business grew in the quarter and gained share across most product categories. Residential carpet adoption of the company's asthma- and allergen-friendly carpet exceeded expectations; laminate continued to outgrow the category; ceramic remodel improved for a fourth consecutive month; and countertops grew on new quartz designs and the concierge program.
- Commercial Flooring ProgressCommercial demand was more constructive than residential demand. Commercial LVT delivered a sixth consecutive month of order growth, while commercial carpet tile, accessories, and the rubber platform also grew in the quarter. Return-to-office activity continued to support carpet tiles.
- Flooring North America Profit ImprovementFlooring North America net sales were $950 million, up 1% as reported, while adjusted operating income increased 80 basis points year over year to $77 million, or 8.1% of sales. Productivity gains of $24 million, price and mix of $15 million, and tariff refunds of $10 million partially offset $25 million of underlying inflation.
- Flooring Rest of World Price and Mix GainsFlooring Rest of World generated adjusted operating income of $66 million, or 9.3% of sales, up 100 basis points year over year. Price and mix contributed approximately $51 million and partially offset approximately $35 million of inflation and a $14 million net headwind from lower constant volumes and an extra shipping day.
- Reduced Capital Expenditure RequirementThe company now expects full-year 2026 capital expenditures of approximately $445 million, versus its prior expectation of $460 million. Management estimates baseline annual capital expenditure needs at approximately $375 million, with the current footprint positioned to support volumes in a multiyear demand recovery scenario.
- Strategic Framework and Innovation InvestmentManagement introduced four strategic pillars: outperforming markets; product innovation and brand strength; profitability and operational excellence; and cash generation and capital discipline. The company plans to continue funding maintenance, safety, productivity, and innovation, including work through three global innovation hubs in Italy, Belgium, and the U.S.
- Productivity and Restructuring SavingsProductivity savings have been running at about $40 million per quarter in 2026. A restructuring program announced in the prior quarter is expected to provide $60 million in annualized savings, with a large portion expected to fall into 2027.
- Seamless Leadership TransitionManagement described the transition to Paul De Cock as CEO as seamless, with Jeffrey Lorberbaum continuing to support the company as chairman.
