Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was predominantly positive, supported by four consecutive quarters of positive comparable sales, 5% system-wide same-store sales growth, improving traffic, strong digital and loyalty engagement, menu innovation, an expanding development pipeline, and maintained full-year guidance. The main challenges were lower reported earnings and adjusted EBITDA, higher G&A and operating costs, commodity inflation, increased debt after quarter-end borrowing, and the need to balance value investments with margin discipline.
For full year 2026, El Pollo Loco expects system-wide comparable store sales growth of approximately 4.5%, G&A expenses between $52.5 million and $53.5 million, excluding onetime charges and including approximately $6.5 million in stock compensation expense, capital spending between $33 million and $35 million, the opening of at least 3 to 4 company-operated restaurants and 15 to 16 franchise-operated restaurants, adjusted EBITDA between $68 million and $70 million with the expectation it will finish near the middle of the range based on current trends, and an estimated effective income tax rate of approximately 29% to 29.5% before discrete items; it expects restaurant contribution margin between 18.25% and 18.5%, commodity inflation to be a little over 3%, and wage inflation of approximately 1%; it expects to open 18 to 20 new restaurants this year and 25 to 30 new restaurants in 2027.
- Strong Same-Store Sales MomentumSystem-wide same-store sales grew 5% in the third quarter, marking the fourth straight quarter of positive comparable sales. System-wide traffic increased 0.7%, and management said positive traffic indicated that more guests were choosing El Pollo Loco.
- Revenue and Company-Operated Comparable Sales GrowthTotal revenue increased to $126.3 million from $121.5 million in the prior-year quarter. Company-operated restaurant revenue increased 4.6% to $105.4 million, driven primarily by 4.4% company-operated comparable restaurant sales growth and sales from three company restaurants opened since the third quarter of 2025.
- Menu Innovation Increased Check and SalesLoaded Quesadillas were incremental to the base quesadilla business and grew overall check. The Chatacoffee beverage lineup was accretive to check and showed potential for incremental afternoon visits. Cheesy Enchilada Double Chicken Bowls were incremental to the existing bowl business, while Pumpkin Pie Mini Churros grew the overall churro business. Management also outlined 2027 testing plans for crunch salads, deluxe wraps with grilled and crispy chicken, and grilled chicken sandwiches.
- Successful National Grilled Chicken Day CampaignThe National Grilled Chicken Day campaign generated meaningful earned coverage across social and traditional media. September 9 became the highest transaction day ever for Loco Rewards, with 56,000 redemptions and 25,000 new Loco Rewards sign-ups on that single day.
- Digital Sales and Loyalty GrowthDigital sales through the app, web, and kiosks represented 31% of system sales, up from 27% in the same quarter last year. Loco Rewards membership grew almost 11% year-over-year, members visited twice as often as nonmembers each year, and rewards members accounted for 14% of all visits.
- Loco Days Increased Loyalty EngagementThe four-week Loco Days summer promotion drove more than a 40% increase in daily Loco Rewards sign-ups and 16% loyalty transaction growth. Management said loyalty represented only about 14% to 15% of transactions, leaving substantial opportunity for further growth.
- Value Strategy Resonating with GuestsManagement said the combination of high-quality, portion-oriented menu offerings and competitive value pricing was resonating with consumers, including younger consumers. Targeted loyalty offers such as Loco Friday drops and the evergreen 2-for-$5 Taco Tuesday promotion were being used to provide value and drive visits.
- Improving Operations and Guest ExperienceOverall satisfaction scores were up meaningfully from a year ago, and the key operating measures tracked by the company continued to improve. El Pollo Loco also appointed Damon Thomas as Chief Operating Officer and described its current operations leadership team as its strongest to date.
- Training Platform Supporting ExecutionThe company upgraded its Pollo Zone learning management system to a modern training platform. Early data showed that restaurants completing the training were more accurate with orders, supporting the company's focus on operational excellence.
- Restaurant Contribution Margin Within Target RangeThird-quarter restaurant contribution margin was 18.4%, compared with 18.3% in the prior-year period, and remained within the company's long-term target range of 18% to 20%. Food and paper costs as a percentage of company restaurant sales decreased 30 basis points year-over-year to 24.4%, while labor and related expenses were flat at 30.4%.
- Expansion into New States and New YorkEl Pollo Loco entered its 10th state, Idaho, and opened restaurants in Meridian and Nampa. The company expects full-year 2026 same-store sales growth of approximately 4.5%, adjusted EBITDA of $68 million to $70 million, capital spending of $33 million to $35 million, and at least 3 to 4 company-operated and 15 to 16 franchise-operated restaurant openings.
