Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive. Granite reported record revenue, adjusted EBITDA, gross profit and CAP; expanded Construction margins; generated higher operating cash flow; raised the low end of 2026 revenue guidance; and outlined substantial federal, rail, mission-critical and Materials growth opportunities. The primary challenges were lower Materials margins from higher energy costs, a delay in tactical infrastructure project completion, uncertainty around transportation reauthorization and charges associated with the convertible note redemption. These lowlights were outweighed by the company's strong quarterly execution, improved outlook and long-term growth targets.
Granite is targeting organic revenue CAGR of 10% to 12% through 2029, with future M&A expected to be additive, an adjusted EBITDA margin of 14% to 16%, SG&A of approximately 7.5% of revenue, operating cash flow of approximately 13% of revenue, CapEx of approximately 3% of revenue and free cash flow of approximately 10% of revenue, while maintaining a long-term net leverage target of approximately 2.5x; core transportation is expected to grow in the mid-single digits through 2029, federal work is expected to represent approximately 15% of Construction segment revenue this year, rail could be closer to 5% in 2027 and pushing up closer to 10% of Construction segment revenue by 2028, and mission-critical infrastructure revenue can grow to at least 10% of Construction segment revenue over the next several years. For 2026, revenue guidance is $5.4 billion to $5.5 billion, with the revised range reflecting approximately 15% organic growth and approximately 9% growth from acquired businesses at the midpoint, operating cash flow is expected to be approximately 11% of revenue, and all other 2026 guidance assumptions are maintained; 2027 organic revenue growth is now expected at 10% to 12%. The company expects continued 50 basis point improvement each year over the next 3 years in both Construction and Materials gross profit margins, approximately 45% of eligible aggregate facilities to be automated by the end of 2026, approximately $1 per ton of benefit from automation investments, 2 or 3 more deals completed this year with total spend up to about $750 million if all 3 deals get across the finish line, year-end CAP burn of somewhere between 40% to 50%, or somewhere maybe 45% to 50%, next year’s aggregate price increases at kind of that mid -- a little bit higher price increases, asphalt pricing at low single digit, and volume in the upward kind of slightly upwards.
- Record Third-Quarter Financial ResultsGranite delivered record third-quarter revenue and adjusted EBITDA. Revenue increased 23% year-over-year to $1.8 billion, gross profit increased 29% to $336 million, adjusted net income increased by $49 million to $173 million, and adjusted EBITDA increased by $67 million to $283 million.
- Record Construction Segment PerformanceConstruction segment revenue increased $312 million, or 27% year-over-year, to $1.5 billion. Acquired businesses contributed $64 million, or 6%, while organic growth contributed $248 million, or 21%. The segment delivered record revenue and gross profit, driven by record CAP and strong project execution.
- Construction Margin ExpansionConstruction gross profit margin increased 210 basis points year-over-year in the third quarter and improved 80 basis points year-over-year for the first nine months. Management attributed the improvement to disciplined project selection, stronger risk management, improved execution and reduced project fade, and said further margin improvement opportunities remain.
- Record Backlog and Strong Project VisibilityConstruction CAP increased $37 million sequentially to a record $7.5 billion as project wins outpaced revenue burn during the busiest construction quarter. Year-over-year bidding activity and project wins increased again, supported by core public transportation markets and growing federal, rail and mission-critical opportunities.
- Federal Infrastructure Growth OpportunityFederal CAP totaled approximately $1.3 billion at the end of the third quarter, including $569 million associated with tactical infrastructure projects. Federal work is expected to represent approximately 15% of Construction segment revenue in 2026, and management expects the federal business to continue growing through 2029. Current pursuits include airfield recapitalization, naval infrastructure modernization, integrated air and missile defense infrastructure, and space infrastructure.
- Rail Expansion PotentialGranite is in preconstruction with a Class I railroad client on a proposed 4,500-acre integrated rail facility in Southern California. If the project advances through permitting, it could represent a meaningful opportunity beginning in 2027 and ramping up in 2028. Management said rail could approach 5% of Construction segment revenue in 2027 and move closer to 10% in 2028, depending on project timing.
- Mission-Critical Infrastructure MomentumMission-critical infrastructure CAP totaled approximately $331 million at the end of the third quarter. The market includes data centers, AI infrastructure, battery storage and space-sector clients. Project opportunities have increased from approximately $20 million to $30 million historically to approximately $100 million today, and management believes mission-critical infrastructure can reach at least 10% of Construction segment revenue over the next several years.
- Long-Term Organic Growth TargetGranite is targeting a 10% to 12% organic revenue CAGR through 2029, excluding future M&A. Management expects growth to come from core public infrastructure, market share gains and disciplined home-market expansion, as well as faster growth in federal, rail and mission-critical infrastructure.
- 2029 Profitability and Cash Flow TargetsGranite is targeting a 14% to 16% adjusted EBITDA margin in 2029, SG&A of approximately 7.5% of revenue, operating cash flow of approximately 13% of revenue, CapEx of approximately 3% of revenue and free cash flow of approximately 10% of revenue. Management cited gross margin expansion in both segments and greater SG&A leverage as key drivers.
- Materials Demand and Pricing MomentumMaterials demand remained healthy, with aggregate orders outpacing the prior year and asphalt orders in line with the prior year at quarter-end. Through the third quarter, Granite realized its targeted mid-single-digit aggregate price increases and expects continued pricing momentum into 2027. Management expects aggregate pricing increases to be in the mid- to somewhat higher-single-digit range next year, while asphalt pricing is expected to remain low single digit.
- Materials Investments and AutomationGranite continues to invest in aggregate pull-through, Pacific Northwest waterborne logistics, its Southeast logistics network and automation. By the end of 2026, approximately 45% of eligible aggregate facilities are expected to be automated. Management is hopeful that automation investments will generate approximately $1 per ton of benefit through improved efficiency, lower operating costs and more consistent plant performance.
- Strong Operating Cash FlowYear-to-date operating cash flow totaled $404 million, compared with $290 million in the prior year. Based on performance through the first nine months and expected seasonal fourth-quarter collections, Granite believes it is on track to achieve its 2026 operating cash flow target of approximately 11% of revenue.
- Raised 2026 Revenue Guidance FloorGranite raised the low end of its 2026 revenue guidance range from $5.3 billion to $5.4 billion while maintaining the upper end at $5.5 billion. At the midpoint, the revised range reflects approximately 15% organic growth and approximately 9% growth from acquired businesses.
- Improved 2027 Organic Growth OutlookManagement refined its 2027 organic revenue growth expectation to a range of 10% to 12%, compared with the previously stated expectation of above 10%. The outlook is supported by CAP and a robust pipeline across Granite's end markets.
- Acquisition Capacity and PipelineGranite has deployed more than $1.4 billion on acquisitions since 2023 through the third quarter of 2026. Management described the acquisition pipeline in both Materials and Construction as strong, expects to continue deploying capital on acquisitions while maintaining a long-term net leverage target of approximately 2.5x, and is pursuing two or three additional deals that could involve total spending of up to approximately $750 million if completed.
- Successful Cost Inflation ManagementManagement said overall cost inflation has been fairly neutral for the company, with greater impact in Materials than Construction. Higher energy costs were largely recovered through surcharges, pricing actions and hedging, and Materials unit economics expanded year-over-year despite the higher-cost environment.
- Broad-Based Regional Market StrengthManagement described the Western market as strong, with healthy public and private opportunities in California and continued opportunities in Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Alaska. Granite also reported progress in Texas, including airport work and wins involving data center and space infrastructure.
- Collaborative Contracting AdvantageGranite said collaborative contracting is supporting project selection, risk allocation and market share gains. The company believes its experience with CMGC and progressive design-build procurement positions it well for newly available collaborative federal contracting opportunities.
- Share Repurchases to Offset DilutionGranite purchased 300,000 shares during the third quarter to offset expected dilution from stock-based compensation, consistent with prior years.
