Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall. Freshpet reported double-digit volume-led sales growth, record adjusted gross margin, adjusted EBITDA growth, improved cash generation, higher 2026 guidance, expanded distribution, strong e-commerce performance, and significant capacity and innovation opportunities. Management also acknowledged elevated logistics costs, structural ingredient and packaging inflation, competitive entrants, a likely fourth-quarter gross-margin step-down, and a prior-year tax benefit that affected net-income comparisons. The number and magnitude of the reported operational and financial positives significantly outweighed the stated challenges.
For 2026, Freshpet expects net sales growth of 12% to 13%, adjusted EBITDA in the range of $215 million to $220 million, an increase of 10% to 13% year over year, media spending of approximately 12.5% of net sales and over $5 million of additional media investment, logistics costs an additional $10 million to $12 million versus original expectations, adjusted gross margin to improve by approximately 150 basis points at the midpoint of net sales guidance, and capital expenditures in the range of $125 million to $150 million; management expects a step down in adjusted gross margin in the fourth quarter, which could be flat to down year over year, and selective price increases for 2027, when it expects net sales growth well in excess of the U.S. dog food category growth, at least 49% adjusted gross margin, and to capture substantially all of the annualized 100 basis points of adjusted gross margin improvement from new bag technology, while expecting to be in the lower half of its adjusted EBITDA margin range if there is not a significant improvement in the inflation picture.
- Double-Digit Third-Quarter Sales GrowthThird-quarter net sales were $317.8 million, up 10% year over year and entirely volume driven. Nielsen-measured dollar growth was 12.7%, with approximately 1 to 2 points of additional growth from unmeasured channels.
- Record Adjusted Gross MarginThird-quarter adjusted gross margin reached 50%, up from 46% in the prior-year period and 47.7% in the first half of the year. The 400-basis-point year-over-year improvement was driven by strong leverage on plant expenses, reduced quality costs, lower input costs as a percentage of revenue, and some benefit from new bag technology.
- Adjusted EBITDA Growth and Margin ExpansionThird-quarter adjusted EBITDA increased approximately 18% to $64.5 million from $54.6 million a year ago. Adjusted EBITDA margin improved to 20.3% from 18.9%, primarily due to higher sales, gross-margin improvement, and the cadence of media investments.
- Raised 2026 Sales and EBITDA GuidanceThe company raised 2026 net sales growth guidance to 12% to 13% from 10% to 12% previously. Adjusted EBITDA guidance was raised to $215 million to $220 million, representing 10% to 13% year-over-year growth, compared with the prior range of $210 million to $220 million.
- Improved Full-Year Gross-Margin OutlookThe company now expects adjusted gross margin to improve by approximately 150 basis points in 2026 at the midpoint of its net sales guidance, compared with the previous expectation of 100 to 150 basis points.
- Strong Cash Generation and Share RepurchasesThird-quarter operating cash flow was $60.8 million, capital spending was $22.9 million, and free cash flow was $37.8 million versus $31.6 million a year ago. As of the end of September, the company had repurchased 1.8 million shares for $102.3 million under its $150 million authorization and held $345.9 million of cash.
- MVP Household and Buying-Rate GainsMVP household penetration increased 8%, while the combination of total household penetration gains and overall buying rate grew 10%. MVP households represented 72% of sales, up from 71% in the prior quarter and 63% five years ago.
- Large MVP Growth OpportunityFreshpet reported 2.6 million MVP households against an estimated and growing MVP total addressable market of 10 million households, representing approximately 26% of the current MVP TAM. MVPs spend roughly $522 per year, nearly 13 times more than non-MVP households.
- Expanded Retail DistributionStore count increased 5% to more than 31,000 stores, while total distribution points increased 14% due to greater use of larger and double fridges. Twenty-five percent of stores now have more than one fridge, and the company continued expanding with a major rural lifestyle retailer, testing three-door fridges with a major club customer, and adding SKUs with two major club customers.
- Retail Performance Despite New CompetitionManagement stated that new entrants have not affected Freshpet's sales line or retention. In locations where Freshpet competes more directly with newer brands, its products average between 6 to 8 times more sales velocity than those brands. Freshpet remains the fastest-growing dog-food brand in dollars and the second-most popular brand among new Gen Z and millennial dog households.
- E-Commerce and Omnichannel GrowthThird-quarter e-commerce sales increased 35% year over year, and digital orders accounted for 16.9% of total business. Approximately 82% of digital order volume went through the fridge network via omnichannel retail last-mile delivery services. Management said e-commerce had also grown more than 40% in each of the previous few quarters and expects continued growth.
- New Bag Technology ProgressThe new bag technology improved consumer quality feedback and noticeably increased volume trends for the Fresh From the Kitchen product line. The company expects approximately 35 basis points of adjusted gross-margin benefit from the technology in 2026, versus approximately 25 basis points previously, and expects to capture substantially all of the annualized 100-basis-point improvement in 2027.
- Technology-Enabled InnovationThe new technology is enabling new protein formulas, upgraded recipes, new pack sizes such as healthy mixers, and improved inclusions such as carrots and green beans. Management also said a further generation of the technology could be used on additional lines and support additional innovation.
- Homestyle Creations Reached $100 Million in SalesThe premium Homestyle Creations product line surpassed $100 million in annual retail sales during the quarter and was described as the fastest-growing part of the business. Its current Nielsen distribution is approximately 30%, and management identified additional opportunity from broader distribution, new products, and health-and-wellness innovation.
- Manufacturing Capacity and Capital Efficiency GainsThe company said operating improvements unlocked more than $100 million of incremental capacity from its existing manufacturing footprint, equivalent to a new line, allowing it to defer some planned investment. The company continues to target higher throughput, yield, quality, overall equipment effectiveness, and lower capital intensity.
- Lower 2026 Capital-Expenditure Guidance2026 capital expenditures are now projected at $125 million to $150 million, compared with previous guidance of approximately $150 million, following the capacity gains achieved within the existing manufacturing footprint.
- New Bethlehem Distribution CenterFreshpet plans to transition from a third-party distribution center in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to a leased, dedicated distribution center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, opening in early 2027. Management said the facility will add capacity, bring distribution closer to the Bethlehem kitchen, improve control of the cold chain, enhance service levels, and provide a platform for automation and scale.
- Long-Term Category and Market-Share RunwayFreshpet reported approximately 4.5% market share of the roughly $38 billion dog food and treats category and said it is positioned to capture share from traditional competitors. Management believes the fresh pet-food category can become a $10 billion category over time.
- Direct-to-Consumer Customer EconomicsThe direct-to-consumer business is less than 2% of total business, with all customers classified as MVPs and 70% of households new to Freshpet. Annual buy rates for direct-to-consumer consumers exceed $1,600, and management described the channel as complementary and useful for testing innovation and developing 'ultra MVPs.'
- 20th Anniversary and Leadership TransitionFreshpet celebrated its 20th anniversary in October. Cofounder Scott James Morris transitioned to an advisory role, and Nicola Baty assumed the role of president and COO as the company entered its third decade.
