Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Nov 04, 2026|% Change Since:―|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was strongly optimistic overall, supported by the rebound in Megaproject contracting, a record approximately $525 million pipeline, at least $50 million of 2027 Megaproject revenue visibility, technology leadership, zero debt, cash and free cash flow generation, cost reductions, and shareholder returns. The main challenges were shipment-timing uncertainty that prevented guidance reinstatement, below-expectation wastewater quarterly performance, historical China concentration, and near-term aftermarket destocking.

Company Guidance

For 2027, management said it has line of sight to at least $50 million of Megaproject revenue; the $17 million Q4 Megaproject backlog is a floor expectation for Q4, and management expects and hopes there may also be other contracting activity in the next few months. For wastewater, management is expecting a nice tick up in Q4, which should support the business into next year and beyond, and is focused on driving pipeline and growth in Q4 and subsequent years. Management has not restored annual or quarterly guidance because the timing of shipments remains difficult to predict, but said it may shift its position on guidance in the not-too-distant future as project evolution and velocity become more definitive and predictable. The company also expects an accelerated pace of new product innovation in 2027 and 2028, with its new facility in Dammam, Saudi Arabia starting manufacturing next year.

  • Megaproject Contracting ReboundsContracting and construction activity in the Middle East has resumed after work was paused earlier in the year. Energy Recovery signed over $30 million of new Megaproject contracts in the last 30 days, total backlog is over $60 million, and the company has line of sight to at least $50 million of Megaproject revenue in 2027.
  • Record Megaproject Pipeline and Market Build-OutThe Megaproject pipeline reached a record approximately $525 million, up from $500 million-$525 million quarter-over-quarter. Management cited roughly $30 billion of desalination and reuse capital spending expected from 2027 through 2030, increasingly flowing through multi-year national programs and expanding beyond the GCC countries.
  • Customers Continue Long-Term Desalination InvestmentsManagement stated that not one customer has changed a long-term investment decision and that the company is not aware of a single desalination project that has been canceled.
  • Improving Geographic DiversificationThe pipeline is becoming larger, includes more projects and larger projects, and is better diversified between GCC and non-GCC markets, including North Africa, Asia and South America.
  • PX Technology LeadershipThe PX has more than 40,000 devices installed in virtually every major desalination plant worldwide, with many operating for decades with minimal or no failure. The PX Q650, launched this year, delivers the highest capacity and lowest specific energy consumption of any product available and has already been specified at several large desalination sites.
  • First PX Q650 Contract and Broader Product PortfolioEnergy Recovery signed its first PX Q650 contract for the Jubail 600,000 cubic meter per day plant. The company also broadened its portfolio with standardized turbochargers and an ultra-low-pressure PX.
  • Strong Megaproject Win Rate and Accelerated RoadmapIn 2026, the company won every Megaproject above 100,000 cubic meters per day. Management accelerated its technology roadmap by more than 12 months and expects an accelerated pace of new product innovation in 2027 and 2028.
  • Financial Strength and Free Cash FlowFollowing the closure of its CO₂ business, Energy Recovery is a pure-play water technology company with zero debt, almost $86 million of cash and investments, and approximately $26 million of free cash flow generated year-to-date.
  • New Dammam Manufacturing FacilityThe new facility in Dammam, Saudi Arabia is expected to begin manufacturing next year, providing lower-cost capacity in close proximity to the company's largest customers.
  • Operating Expense ReductionCost actions taken during the year reduced quarterly operating expenses by 17% versus last year and almost 23% versus two years ago.
  • Share RepurchasesThe company has repurchased nearly $109 million of stock since the fourth quarter of 2024 and remains prepared to take additional action to protect shareholder value.
  • Q4 Megaproject Revenue FloorManagement described the $17 million Q4 Megaproject backlog as a floor expectation and said additional contracting activity may occur during the next few months.
  • Wastewater Organization and Go-to-Market ChangesThe company merged its previously separate wastewater and water sales organizations into one water organization from a sales and service perspective. The combined organization has a renewed go-to-market strategy focused on segmentation, target-account identification, pipeline development and growth.
  • Wastewater Market DiversificationWastewater opportunity is becoming increasingly diversified, with the percentage associated with China declining as the company expands into India, North America, Europe and other markets. Management cited approximately 300 reference cases around the world.
  • Expected Wastewater ImprovementManagement expects a nice tick up in wastewater performance in Q4, which it said should support the business into next year and beyond.
  • Long-Term Aftermarket OpportunityManagement expressed excitement about the long-term aftermarket business and cited potential from replacement demand as well as ancillary products and services.
