Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 28, 2026|% Change Since:0.00%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was predominantly positive, with management emphasizing 14.2% year-to-date annualized total shareholder return, $7.62 of quarterly operating EPS, record $634 million of net investment income, more than $1.4 billion of year-to-date capital returned, improved attritional loss ratios, and continued growth opportunities in specialty and international businesses. The principal challenges were approximately $600 million of casualty reserve strengthening, $302 million of catastrophe losses, declining reinsurance and casualty premium, competitive renewal conditions, higher expense ratios, and the expiration of the AIG TSA payment. Management presented these actions as deliberate efforts to strengthen reserves, improve risk quality, and prioritize underwriting returns over premium growth.

Company Guidance

For the January 1, 2027 renewals, Everest expects market conditions to remain competitive, particularly in CAT renewals and peak zones, with “some additional rate decreases,” and said it “wouldn’t be surprised” to get more selective; Global Wholesale & Specialty is expected to deliver combined ratios “in the mid to high 90s in the near term,” while its full-year expected range is “in the mid to high 90s”; share repurchases of $300 million remain the quarterly floor, with expectations to exceed that amount when appropriate; net PMLs are expected to “decrease marginally” as the market cycle plays out, with “no material shifts” in the cat load; short-term net favorable reserve releases are uncertain, although reserves are expected to be released as lines mature; and the AIG portfolio’s average duration is “three to four years,” while the $30 million a quarter TSA payment expired at the end of the third quarter.

  • Positive Shareholder ReturnEverest generated a year-to-date annualized total shareholder return of 14.2%.
  • Strong Operating EarningsThird-quarter after-tax net operating earnings were $7.62 per share, driven by disciplined attritional underwriting, record net investment income, and accelerated capital return.
  • Stronger and More Conservative Balance SheetManagement strengthened casualty reserves and reinsurance while taking limited credit for favorable short-tail development. Reserves were over $850 million above actuarial central estimates as of September 30, a differential management said had increased by approximately $300 million from June 30.
  • Book Value Per Share GrowthBook value per share, excluding unrealized gains and losses on the available-for-sale fixed maturity portfolio, increased to $414 and grew both year over year and sequentially despite higher catastrophe losses and reinsurance reserve strengthening.
  • Improved Core Attritional Loss PerformanceCore businesses generated $3.7 billion of gross written premium, while the attritional loss ratio improved to 57.2% year over year. In reinsurance treaty, the attritional loss ratio improved to 56.3%.
  • Reinsurance Portfolio Discipline and Attractive OpportunitiesEverest continued reducing U.S. casualty exposure and selectively reducing business where rates were inadequate. Management said attractive capital deployment opportunities remain in global specialty and financial risk portfolios, and that current rate levels continue to deliver a very strong expected return.
  • Global Wholesale & Specialty GrowthGlobal Wholesale & Specialty gross written premium increased over 3% year over year, with double-digit international growth across financial lines, marine, and specialty classes. Management attributed the growth to targeted international markets, product expertise, adequate rates, and improved portfolio mix.
  • Improved Global Wholesale & Specialty Attritional ResultsThe Global Wholesale & Specialty attritional loss ratio improved by 90 basis points year over year to 60%, reflecting disciplined risk selection, portfolio management, underwriting actions, and improved business mix.
  • Record Investment IncomeNet investment income reached a new quarterly record of $634 million, including $144 million from the private equity portfolio. Book yield increased to 4.6%, compared with a current new-money yield of approximately 5.1%, while average credit quality remained double-A minus.
  • Accelerated Capital ReturnEverest returned approximately $550 million to shareholders in the quarter, including dividends, bringing year-to-date capital return above $1.4 billion. The company repurchased approximately 1.3 million shares for $474 million at an average share price of $374, and its share count had declined approximately 13% since the beginning of 2025.
  • Share Repurchase FlexibilityManagement continues to view $300 million of quarterly share repurchases as a floor and expects to exceed that amount when appropriate given the strength of the balance sheet and earnings generation. The payout ratio over the last four quarters was approximately 92%.
  • Conservative Reserving Process and Stable Current-Year Loss PicksManagement said it thoroughly reviewed material long-tail reserve studies, refreshed assumptions and methodologies, enhanced claims analytics and line-of-business segmentation, and did not give credit for underwriting actions unless evident in the data. The 2026 loss picks remained unchanged because they were already set conservatively.
  • Short-Tail Reserve PrudenceAlthough Everest released approximately $500 million to $550 million of short-tail reserves year to date, management said a substantial redundancy remains in short-tail reserves and that most favorable short-tail emergence in the quarter was held back to preserve balance-sheet conservatism.
  • Insurance Business Reserve StabilityThe reserve studies for Global Wholesale & Specialty and legacy insurance resulted in de minimis net overall reserve movement, with no meaningful change to reserves subject to the ADC. Approximately $1 billion of net limits remained under the ADC.
  • Legacy Portfolio Transition On TrackThe transition of Everest's commercial and retail insurance business to AIG remains on track. The legacy portfolio is paying down in line with expectations, with an overall duration of approximately three to four years.
  • Continued Specialty and International ExpansionManagement highlighted opportunities in international markets and specialty businesses, including global engineering, renewable energy, parametrics, construction-related coverage, financial lines, and London-market specialties. These areas were described as higher-margin or high-performing portfolios with adequate rates.
  • Strong Franchise and Reacceleration CapabilityManagement emphasized Everest's nimble organization, empowered regional leaders, deep customer relationships, broad expertise, and top-tier position on reinsurance panels. It said these capabilities had allowed Everest to prune exposures in weaker markets and reaccelerate during hard markets.
  • Strong Balance Sheet Despite Debt Capital Treatment ChangeManagement said S&P's view that Everest retains substantial double-A capital despite the loss of capital treatment on approximately $2.4 billion of legacy debt demonstrates the strength of the balance sheet. Everest is in discussions with regulators and said multiple compliance options do not involve resetting coupons.
  • Favorable Rating Agency Implications From Reserve ActionsManagement said the negative outlook from rating agencies relates to reserve volatility rather than balance-sheet strength or solvency, and that the quarter's reserve actions should help address concerns about future reserve volatility.
