Q4 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call reflected resilient execution and strong financial discipline, with fiscal 2026 revenue growth, stable EBITDA, solid cash generation, customer wins, liquidity, and a higher fiscal 2027 EBITDA outlook. However, management also emphasized significant volume, mix, cost, tariff, labor, geopolitical, regional, and cash flow headwinds, particularly in EMEA, China, and the Americas. The positive achievements and planned margin improvement were balanced by a declining revenue outlook and substantial execution requirements.
For fiscal 2027, Adient expects global vehicle production to decline approximately 1%, revenue of approximately $14.8 billion-$15 billion, adjusted EBITDA in the range of $900 million-$925 million, and free cash flow of more than $100 million, with continued modest margin expansion in a declining sales environment. Fiscal 2027 cash flow is unfavorably impacted by $60 million of actions pulled forward to fiscal 2026 and another $35 million headwind year-over-year related to dividends; restructuring dollars are expected to be sort of flattish, with an increase in the other regions offsetting a small decrease in Europe. The company is currently planning approximately $100 million of share repurchases, while its current authorization represents over 30% of its share count at today's prices; combined cash flow over fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027 is expected to be closer to $320 million, with somewhere in the $800 million of cash on the balance sheet and the possibility of pushing that even to $750 million. Adient expects to grow above market in China, Asia Pacific is expected to outperform the market growth dynamics in China and in Asia Pacific as a combined entity, the Americas expects growth over market in its highest contribution product lines and margins to expand, especially on an operating level, while growth over market in Europe remains a significant unknown.
- Fiscal 2026 Revenue Growth and Cash GenerationFiscal 2026 revenue was approximately $15.2 billion, up 4% year-over-year, while adjusted EBITDA was $884 million, flat versus last year. The company generated $222 million of free cash flow and ended the year with $886 million of cash on the balance sheet.
- Share Repurchases and Debt ReductionAdient repurchased $100 million of its shares, approximately 4.9 million shares or roughly 6% of shares outstanding, and paid down $35 million of debt. The company ended the year with $2.4 billion of gross debt and $1.5 billion of net debt.
- Solid Fourth-Quarter Financial ResultsFourth-quarter sales were $3.7 billion, up 1% year-over-year. Adjusted EBITDA was $229 million, adjusted EBITDA margin was 6.1%, and adjusted net income was $40 million, or $0.52 per share. Adjusted EBITDA increased $3 million year-over-year.
- Underlying Business Performance Offset Conflict CostsFor the full year, positive business performance offset $41 million of Middle East conflict-related costs, with Adient reporting nearly $100 million of favorable business performance year-over-year. In the fourth quarter, favorable material margin and commercial discipline supported results despite a $22 million conflict-related cost headwind.
- Strong Liquidity and Refinancing BenefitsAdient ended fiscal 2026 with approximately $1.7 billion of total liquidity, including $886 million of cash and $857 million of undrawn revolver capacity. The refinancing of $500 million of 7% notes through an add-on to the Term Loan B is expected to generate approximately $6 million of annualized interest savings. The trailing-12-month net leverage ratio was 1.7x, and there are no near-term maturities.
- Regional Business PerformanceAdient delivered growth over market in the Americas and China. Asia adjusted EBITDA was $450 million, up $10 million year-over-year, while EMEA adjusted EBITDA was approximately flat at $125 million as restructuring benefits and commercial actions helped offset headwinds. Adient said Asia delivered double-digit margins and expects that to continue into next year.
- Customer Wins Across Regions and PowertrainsAdient secured new and replacement business across electric, hybrid, and internal-combustion platforms. Wins included Nissan's e-POWER vehicle, NIO's Cygnus BEV, Proton's AMA05 ICE platform, Dongfeng Honda's NX1 plug-in hybrid, Volkswagen Audi Q8, Škoda Karoq, BMW X1, X2 and MINI Countryman programs, as well as launches with Mitsubishi Pajero and Xiaomi SkyNomad N90.
- Americas Onshoring Backlog Exceeded $400 MillionThe company said its pure onshoring backlog remains intact and is now exceeding the previously communicated $400 million, including the Nissan e-POWER win. The Nissan program is expected to launch in the back half of fiscal 2028 with around 40,000 annual units.
- Innovation and Premium Seating ContentAutomation and modularity supported new product wins and launches, helping increase content per vehicle. Examples included the StepJoy foot massage product on NIO ES9, ProForce Massage Flow across multiple Asia-Pacific models, and Power Swivel on Leapmotor D99. Adient also highlighted premium features such as zero-gravity seating, swivel functionality, powered comfort features, and flexible second- and third-row seating.
- China Customer Mix and Innovation PositionAdient said it is exceeding its prior target of a 60 China domestic OEM and 40 Western OEM mix, with continued diversification toward Chinese domestic OEMs. Management expects to continue growing above the China market, supported by customer mix, premium massage, long-rail, and swivel-mechanism innovations, and a focus on managing costs.
- FAA Joint Venture TransactionAfter the quarter end, Adient entered into an agreement to sell its 50% stake in the FAA seat-frame joint venture with CFAA, subject to closing conditions. Management said the transaction would simplify ownership and oversight, improve coordination and cost competitiveness, and create a more closely integrated seating solution.
- Fiscal 2027 EBITDA Guidance and Margin ExpansionDespite an expected declining sales environment, Adient expects fiscal 2027 adjusted EBITDA of $900 million-$925 million versus $884 million in fiscal 2026. Management expects continued business performance, productivity, commercial discipline, and restructuring benefits to support modest margin expansion.
- Fiscal 2027 Capital Allocation FlexibilityThe board approved a $400 million increase to the share repurchase authorization, bringing total committed authorization to almost $1 billion and representing over 30% of the current share count at today's prices. Management is currently planning approximately $100 million of fiscal 2027 share repurchases, subject to cash generation, market conditions, and other capital opportunities.
- Protection of Tax AttributesThe board approved a Tax Benefits Preservation Plan to protect U.S. net operating loss carryforwards and other tax attributes. Management said these tax attributes represent meaningful future cash benefits and that the plan is intended to reduce the risk that an ownership change could limit their use.
- Two-Year Cash Flow Performance Above Prior ExpectationsManagement said combined fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027 cash flow is now expected to be closer to $320 million, compared with a prior expectation of approximately $280 million-$290 million, despite lower revenue and a challenging operating environment.
