Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Operating Recovery
The post-pandemic recovery has translated into sustained revenue expansion and materially improved operating profitability. Higher scale across the resort portfolio supports stronger earnings capacity, while the 2025 EBITDA margin indicates that cost discipline is converting demand recovery into durable operating cash generation.
Stronger Cash Generation
Growing operating and free cash flow improves Melco’s ability to fund capital spending, service debt, and maintain resort assets without relying entirely on external financing. Free cash flow exceeding accounting earnings in 2024–2025 also supports the quality and durability of the reported recovery.
Regional Diversification
Growth in Manila and Cyprus provides earnings support beyond Macau and demonstrates that Melco has operating assets capable of expanding under different regional demand conditions. This diversification can reduce reliance on a single market and improve the portfolio’s long-term resilience.
Bears Say
High Leverage And Negative Equity
The combination of very high debt and negative shareholders’ equity materially limits financial flexibility. It leaves more cash flow committed to financing obligations, increases sensitivity to earnings volatility and refinancing conditions, and can constrain investment or shareholder returns when operating conditions weaken.
Macau Operating Weakness
Macau remains the company’s core operating market, so weaker rolling-chip, mass-market, table-game and non-gaming activity has an outsized effect on consolidated results. Continued softness would pressure utilization, margins and cash generation even if other regional properties remain resilient.
Competitive And Margin Pressure
Elevated competition can require sustained spending and targeted cost actions to protect visitation and guest experience, while lower hold and weaker traffic directly reduce operating leverage. These pressures make margin recovery less certain and can keep earnings volatile over the next several quarters.

MLCO Company Deck
MLCO Earnings Call
Earnings Call SentimentPositive
The call balanced positive operational and financial strengths—notably strong liquidity ($2.8B available), meaningful regional EBITDA growth (Manila +9% YoY, Cyprus +60% YoY), property enhancements (REM soft open, new gaming areas) and disciplined capital actions ( ~$134M share buybacks and RCF upsize)—against pronounced near-term challenges, including a significant VIP win-rate decline (3.9% to 2.7%, ~$9M EBITDA headwind), lower visitation/hold pressure, World Cup-related substitution to sports betting, and construction disruption at City of Dreams. Management emphasized cost discipline and flexibility, a roadmap for ramping new assets, and intent to recommence dividends in 2027. Overall, the positives across liquidity, regional growth and strategic investments outweigh the near-term operational headwinds.
