Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
ESS Growth And Orders
Long-term ESS agreements provide commercial visibility and support utilization in a growing storage market. The U.S. prismatic LFP ramp and localized supply chain can strengthen access to regulatory-preferred demand, making ESS a durable growth pillar beyond near-term EV cycles.
Customer And Product Diversification
Winning projects with leading premium automakers validates Samsung SDI’s battery technology and qualification capabilities. Broadening customer relationships reduces dependence on any single vehicle program while improving credibility as European EV adoption develops over the next several years.
High-Power And Materials Expansion
Expansion across UPS, BBU, semiconductor materials and foldable-device applications broadens the earnings base beyond passenger EV batteries. Exposure to high-power infrastructure and recurring electronics production demand can support better resilience and product-mix quality over time.
Bears Say
Persistent Free Cash Flow Burn
Persistent negative free cash flow means investment and working-capital needs continue to exceed internally generated cash. This can require greater reliance on balance-sheet capacity, limiting flexibility to fund expansion or absorb prolonged weakness without additional financing pressure.
Incomplete Earnings Recovery
The return to quarterly operating profit is encouraging, but underlying recovery remains incomplete because TTM operating profit is still negative and earnings remain below prior peaks. Sustained margins and utilization must improve before the business demonstrates durable earnings power.
EV Headwinds And Execution Risk
Near-term EV volume pressure could delay improvement in the automotive battery business, while projected gains depend on executing multiple ramps and supply-chain changes. Delays or weaker demand would leave EV losses elevated and make the recovery more uneven.

Samsung SDI Co., Ltd (006400) Earnings & Revenues
006400 Earnings Call
Earnings Call SentimentPositive
The call presents multiple strong operational and commercial positives: revenue growth (Q2 +5% Q-o-Q, +19% Y-o-Y), return to profitability, significant order wins (U.S. ESS contracts, Mercedes-Benz, top 3 German premium OEMs), successful supply-chain localization for non-PFE LFP, and product/technology progress (U.S. LFP line ramping, all‑solid‑state target H2 2027). Key challenges include reliance on tariff refunds for part of Q2 operating income, near-term EV battery volume risks given U.S. policy shifts, potential capacity constraints from 2028 as demand outpaces current capacity, and execution risk around ramp schedules. On balance the company communicated stronger momentum and tangible commercial wins that outweigh the risks, though several improvements depend on execution and longer-term capacity expansion.
