Q2 2027 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall. The company exceeded second-quarter revenue and operating income guidance, expanded gross margin, delivered more than 40% EPS growth, and reported broad-based growth across The North Face, Timberland, and Altra. Vans remains the main challenge, with a 9.8% quarterly decline and continued wholesale destocking, while APAC weakness, higher inventory, negative year-to-date free cash flow, and second-half tariff expense were also noted. However, management reaffirmed full-year guidance and medium-term targets and expressed confidence in Vans' product pipeline, DTC momentum, and wholesale order visibility.
V.F. reaffirmed fiscal 2027 revenue growth of 2% or better, with The North Face and Timberland each up mid-single digits for the full year and Vans down 2% or better in the second half, resulting in down mid-single digits for the full year; operating margin is expected to be approximately 8%, the full year effective tax rate in the high 20s range, normalized free cash flow flat to up versus last year on a normalized basis of $405 million, actual free cash flow approximately $515 million or better, and year-end leverage between 2.6 and 2.9x. For Q3, revenue growth is expected to be approximately 3% or better, operating income approximately $390 million or better, about $50 million or more above last year, The North Face and Timberland each up 4% or better, and Vans down 4% or better. The company expects gross margin to be still up for Q3, but not as high as 180 basis points, with approximately $70 million-$80 million of overall unmitigated tariff in the second half, and reiterated medium-term targets of a leverage ratio of 2.5 x or better by fiscal 2028 and an operating margin of 10% or better for the full year fiscal 2029.
- Revenue and Operating Income Beat GuidanceSecond-quarter revenue grew 1% versus last year, ahead of guidance for flat revenue. Operating income was $364 million, approximately $50 million above the $315 million guidance, with roughly half of the upside driven by better revenue and gross margin delivery and the other half by a shift of spend from Q2 to Q3.
- Gross Margin ExpansionGross margin expanded 290 basis points to 55.4% in Q2. Approximately 180 basis points came from structural improvements, including lower product costs, integrated business planning, and surgical price increases, while 110 basis points came from an FX tailwind.
- Strong EPS Growth and Lower Interest ExpenseAdjusted EPS was $0.70, up more than 40% from $0.49 last year, primarily benefiting from operating income growth. Net interest expense was $24 million, below the approximately $30 million previously indicated.
- Broadening Portfolio GrowthThe percentage of V.F.'s revenue-generating business that was growing increased to 75% in the quarter from 43% in fiscal 2024, including Dickies. The North Face, Timberland, and Altra continued to grow, while Vans was broadly in line with expectations.
- The North Face Growth and Brand MomentumThe North Face revenue increased 4% in Q2, with growth across categories. Americas grew 8%, EMEA grew 3%, and footwear increased at a double-digit rate globally and across all regions, driven by Clyffe, ThermoBall, and Altamesa. Apparel growth was led by bottoms and transitional jackets, while bags were led by Hot Shot and the Base Camp family.
- The North Face Partnership and Product PipelineThe North Face's U.S. Ski & Snowboard partnership is live, with the first product drop landing in the quarter. The brand is also introducing the reversible Nuptse and is building its business across a wider range of Nuptse products, from Summit Series to Lifestyle. Management stated that the brand has the potential to double over time.
- Timberland Growth and DiversificationTimberland revenue grew 4% in Q2, with Americas up 15% and EMEA up 1%. Growth broadened beyond the 6-Inch boot into Field Boot, Stone Street, Euro Hiker, Boat Shoes, and core PRO franchises. Sneakers and apparel were identified as significant white-space opportunities, while Timberland PRO is being expanded through franchises such as Boondock.
- Timberland Brand Recognition and Retail ExpansionTimberland ranked among the top 10 footwear brands in the referenced teen survey and was ranked the number one fashion footwear brand in the AlixPartners Consumer Sentiment Index. The company opened five additional full-price stores in the Americas, bringing the regional total to 19.
- Altra Delivered More Than 40% GrowthAltra grew more than 40% in Q2, with growth in every region and channel. Road and trail both grew strongly, and the Torin 9 launch achieved strong sell-through. The Vanish Carbon 3 and Tempo 2 expanded the brand's pinnacle race offering. Management stated that Altra's fiscal 2027 footwear growth is expected to fully offset the decline in Vans footwear.
- Vans Product and DTC MomentumVans global direct-to-consumer revenue was positive for the first time in almost five years. Americas DTC continued to grow, EMEA DTC improved, and APAC showed encouraging signs. The Satoshi shoe sold out in five minutes in a DTC-only drop, while the Pearlized Old Skool Yacht Club achieved 100% sell-through in the Americas in less than 24 hours.
- Vans Innovation and Brand EngagementVans was selected as one of the top brands in the referenced teen survey, ranked the number two fashion footwear brand in the AlixPartners Consumer Sentiment Index, and had its Satoshi collaboration included in ComplexCon's top 10 list for Sneaker of the Year for 2026. Authentic delivered strong double-digit growth across channels, and Slip-On returned to growth within DTC.
- Vans Wholesale Recovery Expected in the Second HalfManagement said it has visibility into confirmed and cancellation orders for fall/winter 2026 and spring/summer 2027. The company expects wholesale improvement to follow DTC by six to nine months, with a larger wholesale effect expected in Q4. The second-half Vans revenue outlook was reaffirmed at down 2% or better.
- Cost Structure and Operating Leverage ProgressOperating margin expanded from 4.8% in fiscal 2024, including Dickies, to 7% in fiscal 2026 and approximately 8% in fiscal 2027 guidance. Management expects operating margin to reach 10% or more in fiscal 2029. Structural SG&A savings remain in the run rate, and the company continues to seek additional efficiencies.
- Tax Rate ImprovementManagement expects the effective tax rate to decline from the mid-30s to the low 20s over the next few years. Fiscal 2027 guidance for the effective tax rate was reduced to the high 20s from the original expectation of the low 30s, primarily due to the resolution of historical tax matters.
- Full-Year Guidance ReaffirmedV.F. reaffirmed fiscal 2027 revenue growth of 2% or better and operating margin of approximately 8%. Full-year growth expectations for The North Face and Timberland were tightened to up mid-single digits, while Vans is expected to be down mid-single digits for the full year.
- Third-Quarter Outlook and Medium-Term TargetsThe company expects third-quarter revenue growth of approximately 3% or better and operating income of approximately $390 million or better, about $50 million above last year. The North Face and Timberland are each expected to grow 4% or better, while Vans is expected to be down 4% or better. V.F. also maintained targets for a leverage ratio of 2.5x or better by fiscal 2028 and operating margin of 10% or better in fiscal 2029.
- Free Cash Flow and Debt Reduction PlansNormalized full-year free cash flow is expected to be flat to up versus last year at $405 million, while actual fiscal 2027 free cash flow is expected to be approximately $515 million or better, including approximately $110 million of net tariff refunds. Year-end leverage is expected to be between 2.6x and 2.9x, and the company plans to prepay the April 2027 maturity in March.
- Improved Business Visibility and ExecutionManagement stated that the company filed its 10-Q on the same day as the earnings call and knew its numbers five to six days after the close. Management attributed the improved visibility to deeper operational fundamentals and stronger organizational processes.
