Q2 2027 Earnings Call Summary

Q2 2027
Earnings Call Date:Nov 02, 2026|% Change Since:―|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was optimistic about Ryanair's relative competitive position, balance sheet, fuel hedging for the current year, MAX 10 efficiency, improving fares, and shareholder returns. However, first-half profit declined 15%, fares were lower during the peak summer period, operating costs rose, and management faces a EUR 2 billion FY28 fuel-cost increase with limited visibility and no meaningful FY28 guidance. Management nevertheless emphasized that Ryanair is better positioned than competitors to manage the disruption and expects pricing and market consolidation to support future profitability.

Company Guidance

Ryanair expects FY27 traffic to grow now slightly less, 3% to 214 million passengers, with winter traffic from November to March broadly flat year-on-year, and next year traffic at 220 million passengers, or just over 220 million passengers, representing 3% traffic growth; the market expects profits of about EUR 1.7 billion-EUR 1.8 billion this year, with a reasonable chance to maintain that into FY28, although it is too early to provide meaningful FY28 profit guidance. FY27 jet fuel remains 80% hedged at $67 a barrel out to March, FY28 cover has risen from 15% to 25% at an average price of $95 per barrel, and the company would want fuel cover next year probably up at around 50% or 50% for the first half of next year. A EUR 2 billion increase in the fuel bill next year requires about a 20% increase in airfares, or about EUR 10 per passenger; double-digit fare increases are expected, with Q3 trending modestly up, interpreted as mid-single digits, and Q4 up double-digit percent. FY27 ex-fuel unit costs are expected to be up maybe 2%-3% on the full year, while it is too early to get into details on guidance for FY28 on unit costs; FY27 CapEx is expected to be fairly close to about EUR 2 billion and FY28 CapEx somewhere between about EUR 2.7 billion and EUR 3 billion. The company expects 16 MAX 10s in spring 2027, with 20% more fuel efficiency and 20% more seats, and will launch another EUR 800 million share buyback from February through to December 2027 alongside an interim dividend of EUR 0.273 per share payable in late February 2027.

  • Strong Traffic Growth Despite Lower Summer FaresFirst-half traffic increased 6%, while the company delivered what management described as another strong operating performance.
  • Substantial FY27 Fuel HedgingFY27 jet fuel remains 80% hedged at $67 per barrel through March, insulating earnings and passengers from oil-price volatility and widening Ryanair's cost advantage over other E.U. competitors.
  • Strong Balance Sheet and LiquidityThe company reported EUR 2.6 billion of gross cash at the half-year end after paying down EUR 1.3 billion of debt, spending EUR 800 million on CapEx, and making EUR 400 million of shareholder distributions. The balance sheet is supported by 620 unencumbered Boeing 737 aircraft, strong liquidity, and a BBB+ credit rating; management also described Ryanair as effectively debt-free.
  • Significant Shareholder ReturnsRyanair completed a EUR 750 million buyback in September and has retired more than 40% of its issued share capital since 2008. The board also approved an interim dividend of EUR 0.273 per share payable in late February 2027 and another EUR 800 million buyback scheduled to run from February through December 2027.
  • MAX 10 Fleet ExpansionFollowing the FAA's certification of the MAX 8-10, Ryanair expects EASA certification before the end of December and plans to receive 16 MAX 10 aircraft between the end of January and the end of April 2027. Management said the aircraft provide 20% more fuel efficiency and 20% more seats, supporting approximately 3% traffic growth in FY28.
  • Passenger Growth OutlookManagement expects FY27 traffic to reach 214 million passengers and FY28 traffic to rise to just over 220 million passengers, with the 16 MAX 10 aircraft providing the capacity for the increase.
  • Network Expansion and Airport ChurnThe summer 2027 schedule is already on sale with 126 new routes and one new base in Rimini. Ryanair is reallocating capacity toward countries and airports reducing aviation taxes or fees, including Albania, Italy, Morocco, Slovakia, and Sweden, while continuing to negotiate longer-term airport agreements.
  • Dublin Capacity ExpansionRyanair plans to add 2 million seats and three additional based aircraft in Dublin if the regulator's expected decision confirms a 15% reduction in Dublin Airport fees for next year.
  • Improving Fare TrendsPricing has turned around since approximately the start of August. Q3 fares are trending modestly ahead of the same quarter last year after fares declined 6% in Q1 and 2% in Q2, and management said Q3 demand is strong. The December quarter was approximately 50% sold, compared with 8% for the March quarter.
  • Ex-Fuel Cost DisciplineDespite unhedged oil reaching $130 per barrel, costs excluding fuel rose only 5% in the period. Management expects FY27 ex-fuel unit costs to increase by approximately 2%-3% for the full year, which it said would widen Ryanair's cost gap versus other European airlines.
  • MAX 10 and Engine-Shop Efficiency BenefitsManagement expects the MAX 10's 20% greater fuel efficiency, 20% higher seat count, and warranty benefits to generate savings. Engine shops coming online are also expected to provide a material advantage in engine and maintenance costs.
  • Ancillary Revenue and AI InitiativesAncillary revenue increased 1% in the latest quarter and is expected to rise roughly 1% for the full year. Management expects future ancillary growth of 1%-2% with passenger growth, supported by dynamic pricing, AI initiatives, and the Order to Seat service.
  • Opportunistic FY28 Fuel HedgingFY28 fuel cover increased from 15% to 25% following purchases during market dips, with the cover spread fairly evenly across the four quarters. Management said it may seek to increase first-half coverage toward 50% before the peak summer period.
  • Strong Airport Demand for Ryanair CapacityManagement said 10-12 airports per week are coming to Ryanair's head office to present growth plans, while airports affected by competitor capacity reductions are offering more aggressive terms to attract Ryanair aircraft.
  • Competition-Law Complaint FiledRyanair referred a complaint to the European Commission regarding meetings and information exchanges between Lufthansa and Air France through the European Network Airlines Association, stating that the related Irish High Court case has no merit and is expected to fail.
